Erdogan to make a speech shortly, all conflicting reports at the moment. America is not surprised as Erdogan has been destabilising Turkey rather than stabilising. Heading for Islamic State and wants to be absolute ruler and Turkish Military is intervening.

Everything at the moment is speculation and rumour, but mentioned has been made that Erdogan has flown the country, but yet TRT Media has opened and Erdogan is to make a speech. Only confirmation is that a Military Coup has taken place.

Frightening thing is now that this crisis is ideal for IS to make a move.

Turkish military broadcasts on state TV amid coup reports

An announcement on the Turkish state broadcaster TRT says that a curfew has been declared across Turkey and that airports are closed. The announcer says they are being made to read a statement by the military.

The statement promises a new constitution for the country and says that democracy and the secular rule of law had been undermined. Martial law has also been imposed, it adds.

Social media is limited, local media is trying to explain to people the latest news, but no one knows who is controlling the media. This would include Facebook. TRT media, is being run by the Military but unconfirmed.

Erdogan has been on tv appealing to people to take to the streets in protest, military telling everyone to go home. Not many taking to the streets.

Apparently Erdogan has been broadcasting on FaceTime from Marmaris, supposedly a secure location, the rumours were he had fled Turkey.

The news is coming so fast, it's now being said people are going out into the streets but unclear which side they are taking. Seems to be in support of Erdogan. Situation is escalating .

Definitely agree with David's comment above and having done a bit of reading this morning I am wondering who orchestrated this 'coup'.

Laura B my thoughts exactly. You always have to ask who benefits in a situation like this. Seems like a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt, one would have thought army generals would have been suitably trained to plan and think through all angles. Now Erdogan wants to point the finger at Fethullah Gulen for the coup attempt, smoke and mirrors?
RIP all the victims in this.

The support is for democracy and not for Erdogan, slightly ironic as Erdogan has eroded much of the democracy in Turkey. Tough times ahead as this may lead to a tightening of his powers.

Speaking to a TC friend (here in UK) who says many are wondering exactly the same; it's provided the opportunity to sack many military officers and many , many judges - perhaps all those who even dared to speak against Erdogan.....

An absolute farce, feel sorry for soldiers who died as part of this "coup" whole thing stinks. He has now arrested over 2,500 judges this afternoon, not many left. Cannot the west see what is under their noses. In the past month he has made "friends" with Russia and Israel!!!!!!! again. He seemed to be the only person to be able to use media to tell people to go onto the streets to show him support. That is one thing you do not do, you urge them to keep safe at home.

What a farce how comes he is only one to be able to use media at midnight to appeal to his supporters to take to the streets, on the contrary you would be told to stay at home. Arrested 2 500 judges this afternoon. Last 4 weeks he has made friends with his enemies Russia and Israel. Feel so sorry for these soldiers who were led to believe this was real thing. He now looks to his supporters to be invincible. Are the west blind.

24,000 public employees sacked today in Turkey. Won't be many people left to run the country at this rate.
