I have a friend currently in Near East awaiting emergency heart by-pass operation on Friday, and so we need to find some blood for him. His blood type is A Negative, so not common. They have said that we need to find the same type. I hope there are some kind people out there who would be willing to donate for him. Myself and my husband cannot donate as we are on medication. My friend's wife regularly donates, to help others, as a matter of course and has done for years, but her blood type is A positive so no good. If anyone is willing to help please PM me.

mrsgee, I think blood donation was recently taken over by the 112 emergency organisation from the BRS. Either organisation ought to be able to put you in touch with the person dealing with it. All my family are A +ve, so cannot help - sorry.

Thank you Tom Steel, I have the numbers to contact, so will be doing that shortly. They are in BRS, but according to information you have to try to get the blood yourself, although I understand they do have limited supplies. The doc says we need about 4 or 5 people to provide the blood and with it being a rare type, hope to get someone through Kibkom. Many thanks for your reply though.

madeincyprus, sorry it took a while to get back to you, I have just returned from the hospital. The blood bank is at the Near East Hospital. It is open from 8.00 am to 7.30 pm. Monday to Friday. In order to donate you need to do it on a full stomach and be on no medication. I hope that you are able to help, and thank you for your interest. They have the blood ready for the op tomorrow, but we have to replace it in the blood bank, so you can do it on another day if you cannot manage tonight. If you still want to do it, I will PM my friend's name to you as you will have to tell them who you are donating for. Many thanks

I am A neg but on statins but will donate next week to replace if they will take it. Is Near East in Nicosia or the Girne one.

mrsgee, my wife (a controlled hypertensive on medication) went to give blood (A+ve) at Girne State Hospital this morning for a separate case. She was refused because of a hypotensive reading on the initial check (100/80) - a first ever event and she's been a regular donor for over 40+ years (worldwide). Apparently, another potential donor (male) was also refused for the same reason and he is a 112 volunteer who knows his BP readings and the system well. It may be useful for the equipment/operatives to be re-validated to ensure their readings are both valid and correct, else potential patients will not receive this vital commodity and potential donors will not volunteer. Just a thought if you have any influence there.

The staff at Girne seem to change the rules on a weekly basis. I was refused in December because I admitted to taking Levothyroxine, hubby said I shouldn't have mentioned it. However, I've given blood numerous times before, each time declaring this medication without a problem. On another post JBA has listed what's permitted and Thyroid treatment is OK. I was really upset as I was donating for someone about to undergo an operation so they then had to chase around for another donor.

I am A rh negative and have just passed the 4 months since my last donation. I can go to Girne hospital tomorrow and donate if you still need blood.

aerhere, yes we do still need the blood, but not sure that it can be donated at Girne hospital as it is needed to replace blood taken from the bank at Near East for his op. But, either way, it would be great if you could donate, it is a rare group and someone will benefit from it. Bless you.

If you pm me the name of the person that the blood was for at the Near East, I will try to get it to count as a unit less that you will need. Fingers crossed they will accept my donation and not turn me away for some reason or another.
