Blockage at Metehan Border yesterday

I saw a post on FB that the Metehan border was temporarily closed yesterday by "EOKA" type bullies threatening to attack Turkish registered cars going to the South!
Did anyone else see this happening? and be affected by it?

Might explain why Crofter's daughter suffered verbal abuse because she showed a TRNC driving licence

we were on way to airport yesterday and at Metahan Border were stopped by a large group of people milling around on Greek side, cars stuck in queues our taxi driver turned round ( as did most of the other cars there ) and drove to Pile Border Crossing ( no problem there - straight through ) the Greek Border guard there told us that a group of thirty to forty bikers had just turned and blocked the border without any warning .... apparently its their democratic right. I would like to say a big thank you to our driver from Green Valley.... he was determined to get us to the airport

Thanks for the reply's. I need to take my family to the airport at Larnaca which is why I asked the question. I will take a friend for moral support when I go as I would not like to be caught up in anything like that
What a shame these people feel they have a right to antagonise innocent folk of their right to travel through south Cyprus. They clearly have no thought to any peaceful solution to the continuing problems facing both sides of Cypriots.

We waited in te que to cross overte border at Metahan while the the demostration was taking place. While we were waiting, we were talking to a GC with his TC friend in their vechile. He explained that the demostration took place every year by bikers / people who come from all over Europe to support the reunification of the island.
We dont know how long it went on for as we were only delayed for about 15 mins, but going by the police on duty on the Greek side, I would say for quite awhile going by their rude attitude on seeing the TC number plate on our vehcile. Altough this changed once they saw we wasn't TC's
Once through we didn't encounter any further problems.

BB, I've given up. There are those in the world who cannot be wrong, if they believe Beyamudu/Pergamos is Pyla/Pila - crack on and believe it because it must be right.

Some TC's may as well be GC's for the loyalty they show to their nation, it is quite obviously not a protest to reunify when it is taking place specifically to block/delay the entry of TCs to south Cyprus and disrupt the crossing. The rude attitude of the Greek police is just in keeping with the mentality of the protest and the people conducting it, idiotic.

Some people posting refer to the Pyla/Pila border crossing point at the eastern side of the TRNC. This is incorrect. The border crossing is at Beyamudu also known as Pergamos. The crossing from Beyamudu/Pergamos is onto the British Sovereign base are a (SBA) and there is an SBA police and customs checkpoint. The road from this crossing then heads to the mixed village of Pyla/Pila which is about 2 - 3kms away. Or alternatively you can turn off this road and head into Dhekelia Garrison.
Hope this helps.

There was no problem this morning going or this afternoon coming back. I doubt they'd get away with it on the Sovereign Base Area that you enter immediately after the Beyarmudu crossing (as you go South).

Also known as Black Knight to the personal serving there.

GC's and TC''s been friends in such difficut times / place gives hope to the future and shouldn't be seen as either side been a traitor to their own.
By the way the protest affected both directions at the crosing point.

I thought this had gone, but I cannot see it - hence 2nd attempt. davy2, 'Black Knight' is at Ayios Nikolais some considerable distance east of Pergamos and closer to Famagusta, albeit both crossings lie within the ESBA. Having served in Dhekelia, I can assure you personnel serving there are not confused about crossing names and the fact there is no crossing in Pyla/Pila. The one worry is that 1st time visitors hoping to use the Pergamos crossing from the RoC will seek to do so at Pyla and if it is late at night, they will be further confused/frustrated. Whereas, if TRNC-based expert expat geographers called the crossing by its correct name, there would be no confusion. Google Maps is also a wonderful tool.

Tomsteel,
You are 100% correct.
The Black Knight crossing is close to Gazimagusa and is not the same crossing as Beyamudu/Pergamos. The crossing enters the British Sovereign Base Area just before the British Army Camp at Ayios Nikolaos. This is also known as 4 mile point. The road goes past the camp and winds it way down to the village of Vrysoulles and follows the border onwards forv15 miles to Xylotymbou, Dhekelia and Larnaca.
So to avoid confusion (!) there is a crossing at Pergamos/Beyamudu and also a crossing at Black Knight/4 mile point. Both crossings are from the TRNC onto the Eastern Sovereign Base Area. Both crossings have a SBA customs and police post on the British side.

tomsteel. Don't understand the "cannot be wrong". From a know all who cannot be wrong,I was informed that Pyla,Pile was beyond the village of Pergamos. Because I have to go LCA on Wednesday,I asked in general in a bar the directions in case of similar at Metehan. The guy got his I-pad out & showed me on Google! As far as my post re: probably Pyla tomorrow, I asked my neighbour(Cypriot) an active member of local M/C club if any of the club (yes there are many RoC members) were involved. He said not & they were likely to do "Pyla" next! Absolutely nothing to do with being a know all, just suggesting what coul happen!

Wonderful information flying around, pity someone cannot draw a map showing crossing points, their links to a major road and post on here for use of us occasional visitors and travellers to TRNC.

How188. Might I suggest Google Maps. The view can then be enlarged and will show all crossing points as you scroll the map view. I know Soner has included them on Kibapp (link above) but there are a few mistakes which we are working together to put right soon. Most visitors use either Paphos or Larnaca airports so the motorway(s) system is easy to follow. If you want a specific route card, please PM me and I'll provide it.

Becker, I doubt very much the SBA Police and Customs & Excise personnel at Pergamos would facilitate a m/c protest. However, if it were to be in Pyla, no crossings would be affected, but I guess the UN Forces might have a view.

I have scanned in a map now banned from sale in the south for daring to show Turkish place names... if anyone wants a copy of the jpg images of this map which shows SBAS and crossing points just let me know...
Playing jigsaw with the scans could be fun...Stitching together now...

If I may suggest for security, contact Groucho by PM, giving contact details there, rather than displaying your email address here - it has been known for many years that spammers do trawl through forums for email addresses. Those who have already, edit/remove as soon as possible - hope none of you mind my poking in!
