My water pump controller was replaced just over a year ago. It has suddenly started to leak water from the rear end of the controller when in operation and idle. Can any body suggest a fix or have had a similar problem?

Over the years have had a couple of these that just fail - tried to repair one once, Don't do it!!! Best thing to do is just buy another cheap one and replace the old one. I started off buying the expensive ones but ended up with cheapys that last just as long and are easier on the pocket. Unless somebody knows how to fix them, it seems the only option.

Just in case - its not the pump that is leaking it is the pressure switch control unit (the big black bit on the top of the pump), pumps are easy to repair and normally it is only the seals that have gone, around 8TL a set from the local Yapi and an easy job for any DIY'er. The pressure switch is a different animal altogether and I do not recommend trying to take one apart - if you do then look out for the oil!!!

Press Teknik has expanded into a full yapi market but it is still the original business and they still sell and repair pumps etc.

As to buying cheap against expensive, I bought an Italian make from Press Teknik for 190tl - that was 6 years ago and it is still going strong.

If it is leaking from the back of the pressure controller, then the diaphram has a small hole in it. It is an easy repair if you have a spare, but I don't know if you can buy these seperately.
I usually keep my old press. controllers and take a diaphram from one of them.
It involves isolating the pump if it has valves, which yours appears to, and then taking all the screws out of the back to replace the diaphram.

if it is a cheap one then the best thing is to replace with a new Italian pump and control unit

Well finally got round to replacing the Controller. I took old one off which was the wrong way round (upside down?) The arrows which indicate which way to insert it were pointing down? I have put the new one on wth the arrows pointing up. However it isn't working. There is power and I have checked for correct wiring and it is as per the instructions. On the unit it is showing a red light for pump failure and pump isn't on. If I press the reset and hold it the pump comes on but goes of immediately after I release the button? Any suggestions more than welcome.

Use Orhan 0533 877 5330, english speaking, used him to replace our gas boiler, roof tank and last week pressure pump.

You may need to bleed air out of the pump itself - there is usually a bleed valve (often 'square-headed') on the upper side of the pump housing - it acts just like a radiator bleed valve.
When bleeding a pump, you often need to keep your finger on the reset button for long enough to eliminate all air, and you may find that showers and mixer taps cough and splutter until all the air is actually out of the system.
Failing that, you would probably do best to get a professional to check the way that you've fitted it, and the electrical connections

Thanks for the advice Keith. I have now bleed it and re-checked the wiring (which I guess is correct!). Still not working, I guess I will have to concede and call "a professional" to check it.

One final thought -

I notice that your pump and controller are above ground.

Make sure that the the level of water in your storage tank (depot) is above the outlet pipe of the controller, or there may not be enough ;head' of water to prime the system properly.

I didn't think of it earlier, as my pump is below ground on the floor of the pool room, level with the bottom of my 10 ton depot - so I never have any problems relating to 'priming'

Something is niggling me about this situation though; - the fact that you mentioned that the original pressure unit was fitted 'upside down', with the arrows facing in the opposite direction to the desired flow of water. I can't see how that would ever have worked!

Rang Orhan who came out same day and on time and fixed it! He replaced a broken pipe to the water tank, replaced some pipework to the pump and primed the pump. I suspect that I didn't prime the pump properly. He poured water into the pump, topping it up, the garden tap was then turned on and low and behold it started. I did put water in but not enough and didn't put the garden tap on. I did feel a little foolish , but know for the inevitable next time

I would recommend him. He couldn't understand either how the previous "upside down" controller worked??

DC electric motors can (generally) be reversed by swapping the supply feed around, but if I recall, some AC motors could/can also run the "opposite" way if the feed is reversed - could this have been the answer?

I see what you mean, but it wasn't actually the motor that was the wrong way round (at least as I read the OP's description it wasn't!) - it was the electronic pressure regulator, which incorporates a non-return valve!

Just replace the unit. As Keith stated the controller has a built in non return valve so it would be impossible for the system to work if installed upside down unless of course the valve was goosed,
