Anyone know how much notice is needed to get them to disconnect the Elec and close an account? Also is it possible to actually get them to repay the original deposit?

I don't know how much notice is required, but you can get a refund provided that you still have the original receipt from when you paid the deposit.

No notice is required ;I did it on the day if my departure (26th August), and the disconection was immediate. Kibtek used my 459TL deposit towards the final payment of my bill.

Michelke I was leaving the island on the day that I closed my account; perhaps I was lucky to get my deposit back, or perhaps it was because I have a Kimlic.

Fatouche, the system has a 99% chance of working if you have a Kimlic. Its we apparent 2nd class citizens that haven't a cat in hells!!!

we paid our elec bills on time for over 5 years when we returned to the UK we let our neighbour have our place for one of his friends. When his friend moved out leaving us with a 1000 lira bill we paid it. The elec was cut off and now we have to repay the deposit !

Why do you have to repay the deposit because the supply was cut off????

Does anyone know the answer to my problem.
We have had a property in TRNC for 9 years, paid electric deposit etc and have paid bills on time every time, we have now sold the property and have agreed the purchase of a villa nearby. The electric as far as I am aware has never been switched on although it doea look like a newer smart meter is installed.
Does anybody on Kibkom have any experience of a similar situation..... ie will our deposit from previous property follow and count for this one? Same with the water.... No meter fitted of any type.

Thanks in advance for any advice

goldfish123, rules change here daily and by whoever is dealing with the enquiry at the time (as I suspect you well know, having lived in the TRNC for 9 years). I would suggest, therefore:

Electricity - go to the nearest Kibtec office to where your new villa is located and ask for an English-speaking official (if you do not speak Turkish) or take a TC friend to translate for you. You will need to inform Kibtec anyway of your new address and to get the supply turned on after the villa has been inspected for safety, correct earthing etc.

Water - go the Belediye and ask what the charges will be. Every belediye is applying different costs for a new meter, infrastructure and supply. You may just get a shock if you are buying in the Esentepe area (4000+ YTL before a drop of H2O enters the meter)!

I hope it goes smoothly for you.

Goldfish you can go into the left hand door of the Kibtek office in Girne there is a very helpful English speaking guy right in front of you. He will close your account at your old address straight away providing there is a nil balance, you then might get your deposit back after a time or you could ask if it could be transferred to your new address sorry I do not know the answer to that one.
However I believe that non TCs have to pay some 1000 TL more deposit unless they provide a TC guarantor.
