Recently I have seen - to me - a new type of roofing material! First seen being put on the cafe roof down at Sardunya Bay and last seen on a small wooden building opposite the new petrol station at Alagadi.

It appears to be a "Sheet" material, I think it is corrugated and is red in color but I believe it to be flat on the bottom. I watched - from a distance - the guys at Sardunya fasten it down to what appeared to be 2 X 1 wooden strips with simple nails.

So the question is - has anybody else seen this type of "Sheet" material and knows where to buy it from? It looks a lot easier to manage than the normal tar backed, sand covered, heavyweight stuff on the roll and I am very interested in it. Thanks for any information.

Is this the pressed steel sheet that looks like roof tiles? or the sheeting with insulation sandwiched in the centre?

I would start looking at Gepaz in Alsancak if you are west of town sometime. They have both things I have mentioned in there, if not can you post a pic?

I got my roofing stuff from 'Cenc' - off the roundabout by Lemar (Karoranouglu). They have quite a selection in the store at the rear, and the storeman spoke some english. I took in a picture on my mobile of the style i wanted which helped.

Thanks guys, it is not the sheeting with the insulation sandwiched in the centre, I have seen that but it is not what I am after. Never seen the pressed steel sheet that looks like roof tiles but I do not think that steel is the answer, it would be way to noisy in the rain. This stuff - sadly I have not seen it close up yet - was being handled as if it weighed very little at all and it made no "Tin Sheet" type noise at all when it was dropped and nailed down so I suspect is is some hardened form of standard roofing felt. I will be going past Sardunya Bay again next week and will drop in for a closer look. I will also call into Cenc at the same time, as I live in Catalkoy I try to make all my trips across to the far west worthwhile - lol. Many thanks again.

Arman metal in Alsancak supply a composite sheet material that looks like terracota roof tiles. Maybe close to a centimetre thick. Quite pricy but has a good guarantee period. Comes in various lengths I believe.

It is like the thick composite material with corrugated profile.
I am sure Gepaz have it.

That's the explanation I was looking for "thick composite material", obviously not a computer term or I would have had it on the tip of my tongue - lol!!

Thanks so much people, I will trip out to Gepaz on Monday and start the hunt from a great starting point. And all of this just to put an easier roof on a new car port, putting up the last one took me ages and scuffed most of the skin off my knees as well so hoping this new stuff will do the trick.

Actually, the 'composite - whatever' sounds like the stuff that I need for a little job, if it saves a chipboard roof and a blowlamp!

Just been onto Gepaz.

If this is the stuff you want Waddo, thin corrugated composite roof panels, there is a sample just to the right of the front entrance.

Very light, a little flexible and would benefit from the corrugated supports you can get for similar types of roofing, if these too are available.

Other material also there for making the ridge, though you may have to use another sheet and cut it into long strips to make these.

Didn't ask the price, but can't see it being expensive at all.

Thanks again guys, I will be going in on Monday - can't get in earlier - and will have a good look at the stuff and find out the prices/size for you all as well. Have worn out two sets of knee pads in the last 10 years but still have the good old military armored ones but find them hard work just to wear now I am old and frail - lol.

Roofing report: First went to Gepaz as my wife (The Boss) was sure that was where I had to go - this based on absolutely no idea what I was looking for apart from that famous "womens intuition" that seems to guide all females through a stress free life - found the thin metal based but red colored roofing material described above just to the right of the entrance! Not what I was looking for as the Boss said it would make too much noise in the rain, but many thanks for the help on that one.

Next stop was Genc opposite where I think a new medical center is being built, just before the (to me) new roundabout if coming from the West and just after if coming from the East. There I found a mine of different products but none of the material I was after - then!!! I think I need to take a trip out to Sardunya Bay again, for a burger and advice on where and what they got what they have used, later on that one.

Genc were very helpful indeed and I spent some time with the guy who runs the outside storage place at the back - he is the Near East University Badminton Coach and has good English so we had lots to talk about. They have the standard corrugated iron (too noisy), a selection of different colors of the corrugated fiberglass material (won't stop the UV at all) and two types of the "sandwich" type of material. Type A is corrugated on one side only and flat on the other, the corrugated side is galvanized so no problems there, the flat side is for inside and is aluminium and can easily be painted. This is about 1.5 inch's thick, lightweight and easy to fit and work with, they will also cut it to size for you. Type B is also corrugated on one side, is about 2 inch's thick and has the same smooth and shiny white finish on all sides.

Type A is $14.00 per square meter - as I need 24 square meter's that works out to just shy of 1,000.00TL for the roof.
Type B is $25.00 per square meter and works out too expensive for my pocket.

So far, the best seems to be the Type A plus some additional flat box section metal for additional support, paint and the screws to hold it all together, giving me a total cost of 1500.00TL for a DIY car port that is maintenance free and should outlast me by a fair number of years!

More to follow as I try to track down the elusive "thick composite material", probably now to be found at Arman metal in Alsancak as mentioned above. Half the fun of doing things yourself out here is the "Chase" and the "Discovery" process of tracking down the things that are available but that nobody will tell you about in case you use them!!! The chase is still on guys and I will be back - sad I know - with any further information I can get.
