I've got an MOT coming up next month. As my number plates have slight cracks in them I'd like to replace them. Where's the best place to get them made up. I live in Karsiyaka so west of Girne would be best. Thanks to Keith Caley in advance!

Had mine replaced in Alsancak. There is a group of shops down from the Atakara Petrol station opposite the Hillside Restaurant.

They were good and efficient.

That shop moved recently next to the O'live bar. It got a negative write-up on here recently and I was wondering if there was an alternative. If it's the only one then my choice will be rather limited.

The advertising shop in Alsancak on the coastal road, opposite the Camelot turn off . It's next door to the upholsterer's. Prices start at 15TL for a bog standard number plate which they make on the spot and attach to tour car if you so wish at no extra cost.

The shop along from O'live bar did ours and they are fine. Took old one's off and fixed the new one's.

The last place that did mine was 'Tunç' - the advertising place on the Alsancak / Lapta border, next to the Gym, but the shop looked empty when I went past yesterday.

I have noticed that the backing is starting to peel a little, so wherever you go, I would recommend that you ensure that the backing is really well pressed on before it's fitted to your car...

Keith, that's the place I was talking about. Thinking about it, I believe they were relocating to a shop on the roundabout at the nunctionof the caost round and the bypass in Alsancak.

My MOT due next month.........very very important is the number plate. Never mind the suspension is rubbish, exaughst falling off etc....

I happened to take another car for its MOT earlier this week....not ours. Waited in queue and people watched. Two cars in front, first owned by an old boy was called forward. Check starting with the penlight check of the vehicle engine block number (do make sure its readable!), not zure they really do read the number, but hey ho...............followed by lights, wander round look at tyres etc.....oldboy who owned said vehicle stood watching, dispassionately. Second car next to him was called forward a good 5 mins after, driven by a smartly dressed lady, looking glamorous. Penlight check of vehicle engine block number. That was it.....she was waved on her way. Old boy still standing looking on dispassionately!

All very amusing.


Mind you, back in the day when we lived southside...80s and 90s it was very common for those wives of military personnel taking a cypriot driving test to leave a bottle of duty free whiskey strategically placed on the back seat...............guess what the test result was.

Some may find this outrageous, I just happen to think it all very amusing and typical of Cyprus! Happy days.

I take mine to Erdener Garage and leave it with them. For a few extra TL they take it for the MOT and guarantee a pass, even though my mud flaps fell off a long time ago.

I plan to take mine in for a service at Erdener garage in next couple of weeks and also let them sort out MOT as well.

But it was was an eye opener seeing the MOT station in action!

MOT, All smoke and Mirrors, Vin Numbers Match - Yes, Mud Flaps On - Yes = Pass

Is an emission test certificate still required, or has that become part of history?

Yes, It's still needed, preferably dated 'same day as MOT / Tax paid'...

I had anew rear plate last week , 15 TL also supplied and fitted on the spot. on the coast rd. (old rd.) heading west just before the Alsancak Bypass Island on the left hand side.Big shop only opened recently , in fact I think it maybe the one that used to be in Alsanacak that some people have mentioned.
