Renting car for 6 people in the South & driving to the North
Can anyone please tell me if this is possible. My son and family will arrive at Akrotiri on 18th and wants to pick up a hire car somewhere near the base and then drive to the Karpaz and spend a week here.
Can it be done or what??
The North car hire have a people carrier and they would pick him up by taxi near Limasol take him to SUR car hire in Bogaz, Iskele and then he would come here.
He wanted to avoid all this changing of cars - taxi from the base - taxi to north - then hire car

Re: Renting car for 6 people in the South & driving to the N
There are numerous south side registered hire cars across in the TRNC, so it is possible. Many are picked up at Larnaca airport and come over for a week or two before dropping off on return home.See them parked up outside properties around us. Sometimes the hire car company will arrange the insurance and other times you do it yourself at the border crossing ( Need to check that the insurance booth is open at whatever crossing is used).
I believe you may need a note/letter from the hire car company just to confirm the vehicle can be taken to the north.
Hopefully you can find a hire car company close to Akrotiri that has the right vehicle and allows it to ne taken across the border for a week.
Others I am sure will be able to confirm or offer advice.
All the best.

Be very careful about the insurance. For south side vehicles to come across it will only have third party cover which you buy at the border.

You can get fully comp insurance, I bought it when we came north earlier this year. The insurance was through Tower Ltd who are based in Nicosia. The car was rented from Markos at Ayia Napa.It was not cheap though,$50 for three days.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I have now booked a car with Petsas as somebody else also recommended them. They are giving a fully comprehensive insurance for NC for €50 and a piece of paper to show to customs. Having heard everybody's experiences, I hopefully asked all the right questions. It was best to have the conversation per email as the woman was not always sure what I said but no problems with the written English.
Now we wait for Tuesday and see if all is well !!

Just to say that all went pretty well. The only thing I did not find out in time that Petsas are the authorised car rental firm for British Forces and therefore are allowed to drive onto the bases. I could have saved our son a 30 mins wait, while this got sorted, otherwise all was great. the cost was €485 for 8 days with a fully comprehensive insurance and insurance for the North with document for the Turkish customs for a 7 seater car.
