Esentepe rubbish dump - still burning!

Almost 6 months since the fire started - the Belediye has re-opened the dump and are seemingly adding more fuel to the fire!

Have they taken any advice on how toxic the fumes might be, given that burning plastics are known to give off CYANIDE fumes, I also wonder how many of his villagers the mayor is happy to poison?

All those who won't pay the prices he's demanding for water and meters....

Here's a warning about burning plastic bags.
Not to mention the various other plastics etc at the dump.

Burning any type of plastic releases toxic and potentially cancer-causing chemicals into the air, where they can be inhaled by humans and animals and deposited in soil and surface water and on plants. Residue from burning contaminates the soil and groundwater and can enter the human food chain through crops and livestock. If humans are near burn piles that contain plastic bags, they can easily ingest the toxic fumes directly into their systems.

I so love living in the village, but just cannot understand why the local's are not pro active regarding the health issues here. As an expat, I don't feel anyone would take any notice of what we think or feel. Navek, I totally agree with all you say.

Living within a few hundred meters away from the fire we are really concerned about the situation but feel powerless to do anything about it.

Complaints to the local mayor fall on deaf ears and it's illegal for foreigners to form a protest.I really don't understand why the locals are allowing the fire to continue to poison their families.

It's very concerning.

Art, have you considered approaching the Girne Land Office if the Mayor will do nothing? I am also surprised the Muhtar has not intervened on the villager's behalf. Quite what the solution, either short or long term is, I guess requires professional environmental investigation. I wish you every success together with the road repairs in Esentepe.

Thanks for the advice Tom.

I read in CT that the mayor is standing firm over the price of connecting the Turkish water.Very sorry to read this and I hope he changes his mind or some other governing body steps in and changes it for him.

A further letter is being prepared for BRS approach to the PM, Min for Agric & Environment, Min for Interior and Foreign Min who asked BRS why expats are leaving in such high numbers. We await the future. How's Mary doing?
