If you have stop taps fitted either side of the pump, turn off the one on the outlet (the one that feeds the house). If the pump still continues to turn on and off, then you need a new pressure sensor / control unit. This can be either one of the bulky tanks containing a rubber bladder, or one of the newer electronic controllers. The latter is the preferred replacement whichever is currently fitted.

If it isn't the above mentioned item that is at fault, then the issue is most frequently due to seepage in / from the cistern in a toilet - can be due to faulty ballcock valve not shutting off the water properly, or to a dodgy seal at the bottom of the cistern (it sits on a doughnut shaped seal).

The easiest way of checking this (if you cannot actually see water dribbling down the toilet bowl) is to dry each toilet bowl, and lay some dry toilet paper on the inside of the bowl, you will then see any leaks almost immediately as they cause the paper to become wet... If you do detect a leak in this manner, turning the taps on the wall off (the taps that feed the cistern and bidet attachment) should confirm whether that leak is the sole cause of the intermittent pump operation - don't be surprised if there is more than one cause! The tap that feeds the bidet can also be at fault of course, if it doesn't shut off completely.

Good luck

I was wondering the same thing as goped. Thank you, Keith.

Don't forget non return valves and pressure relief valves leaking solar panels etc

Quite right Kevin, my suggestions were by no means exhaustive, just a reasonable starting point.

There are loads of other possible causes, but it's as well to check the more obvious things first...

Of course, if they notice a steady drip of water coming down from the roof, or a damp patch near some plumbing, then they should home in on that as a priority, but I'll wait and see how they get on before I get too technical, and have 'em digging up the patio or ripping out the kitchen units
