Gravestones and surrounds

Hi. i was hoping somebody would have advice for me regarding headstone and surround for my late husband's grave. I* went to a place near Stormax, who specialise in marble etc but prices are pretty high for grave stones . My husband never wanted to be buried as we both prefer cremation but he has been buried at Greenhill cemetery. All I wish to do is finish the grave with a decent surround and headstone, purely out of respect for him. Both of us would not be into visiting graves so no-one will see the finished article but I* have to do this for my own peace of mind. Surely some of you have had to arrange this and therefore would be able to help me and put me in touch with the appropriate tradesman.
I really6 would appreciate any advice. thankyou

There is a stone mason on the opposite side of the road to Stormax, and we
had a grave stone made for a friend of ours. It wasn't very expensive and it
was done in less than a week. We were very pleased with the result. Apart
from that , there is another one just the other side of the town just over the
island passed the Pia Bella Hotel on the left hand side. Hope this helps.

Thankyou for that. However, the stonemason opposite Stormax is charginf £950 for all types of gravestones whether it be full length grave in marble or just the surround and headstone. Seems very odd to me. I was hoping for more of a response tho because I am sure that many of us had to deal with death and funerals here. I just cannot find any information about this anywhere. Be grateful for any help or advice, thankyou.

Whatever you do you need to allow 12 months for the ground to settle, then have it compacted. I know some people short term put a wood cross with the name on until ready for headstone and surround. I know someone who does this at Lapta cemetery if you are interested.

I think Greenhill recommend 18 months for settlement.

Thanks all and I think I have found a stonemason who can sort things out. will post once organised. Meanwhile, it is a minimum of 2 years to wait for settlement according to the British cemetery comnmittee ok?

I have been told that Rocmar on the industrial estate at Karaoglanoglu are very good and very reasonable.

Thankyou frontalman. I have had a second quote and it is the same price as the first. Ridiculous just for a surround and small headstone in stone not marble. I will try at Rocmar next and post my findings.

Frontalman, many thanks for pointing me to ROCAMAR. It was difficult to find on the industrial estate but worth the time. Really sweet owner and he is doing the work for me for less than half the price that others were asking. Also i will have a foto of my husband on the headstone using the latest techniques to preserve it under the hot sun here. I am so happy and would recommend them to everyone. The prices vary depending on your requirements but very reasonable indeed. Directions to Rocamar are going from Alsancak towards Girne, the industrial estate is on your right, opposite Ian Smith's estate agency. There are 3 entrances on the right and I now take the last one opposite BLUE SHINE and go straight up, cross over the road and veer slightly to the right , follow the road round and take first left. it is just up there. you will see all the marble on display.

I understand Rocmar are where the locals go. It really does help if you have inside knowledge doesn't it?

Glad you found Rocamar. I have also met with the owner and he was exceptionally helpful. Very reasonable and has also come up to the cemetery with us. I will be using his company when I order a gravestone for my mother's grave and a friend will also be using him for her partner's grave.
I watched his workers prepare the ground for another gravestone one time when I was visiting Mum's grave and they did a good job.
British Cemetery Committee recommend 18 months for the ground to settle but with all the rain we have had this winter it will probably have settled quicker!
They are tricky to find but Bethany's directions should help you find them OK.
The owner also speaks English which is a great advantage, and he is very understanding.
They are on Facebook as Rocamar Mermer, for those of you who use Facebook.

I also went to the one opposite Stormax as they were on the recommended list.
Totally unimpressed with their attitude and price. More than double Rocamar and I felt that they thought all English would go to them as they had been recommended, hence the price in GBP. They will not be getting an order from me.

I too have used Rocamar for a gravestone. Can has lots of examples on his Facebook page and if you go visit him he will talk you through the different types of stone they have and options available. We have also used him to have new granite worktops and splashbacks in our kitchen - his workers were really efficient, very polite and as clean as tidy as possible, the result looks amazing, just what we wanted! We found them very easy to deal with and were happy with the price we paid. I would highly recommend them!

I would also recommend Rocamar. My friend had her husbands gravestone made by them. He is extremely polite and helpful and the finished article was beautiful with inscriptions engraved as requested. He has many different designs, types of stone, marble etc, and will do whatever you want. She had also originally been to one on the main road, who, for a basic gravestone wanted almost double, and he did not even ask about the design or inscription, so I daresay the price could have been even higher. We were taken to Rocamar by a Turkish Cypriot friend who also told us not to go for quotes alone as once they realise you are English the price goes up. This is not the case with Rocamar, he really is a gentleman.
