You can do it a few days before expiry, we did ours.

Ah well. In spite of my earlier post and JoeandJelly's experience I tried renewing our road tax today (like the OP it expires on 31st January).
No chance. Come back in two days. You couldn't make it up!

That is so odd bcause I did not think you could renew until 1st in case a sudden increase was announced but when we were in the tax office yesterday the queue at that desk was out of the door?
