Are you a keen cyclist or have not cycled for a while but have been meaning to get back on your bike? No matter what your standard or experience of riding you may be interested in joining the ‘Poppy Riders’ who meet every Sunday morning for an hour or two’s social cycling? Simply contact the team leader Martin Derbyshire for further info on 0533 873 2558 or by emailing him at: martyderby@icloud.com
Last September the ‘Poppy Riders’ raised a huge sum of money for the RBL Poppy Appeal by cycling around the whole island of Cyprus and it is hoped to raise further funds for this worthy cause in 2017. Currently the group consists of around 15 cyclists and in addition Angela Phillips, who is an experienced mountain biker and the only female to complete last year’s epic island wide ride, is keen to have female cyclists join her to form the ‘Poppy Seeds’, who sometimes train with the ‘Poppy Riders’ and sometimes as just a girl’s get together. Angela can be contacted at: angela.phillips@fastmail.co.uk
Mr Derbyshire said: “We formed the cycling club last February and we have a broad level of experience within the group and we would be delighted for more cyclists to join us, in addition we have an active social life amongst the riders. We meet every Sunday morning at the Olive Press Bowling Club in Lapta for a social ride of up to 2 hours followed by a few beers and also informally some of the riders get together on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for a training ride. The aim this year is to do a weekend sponsored cycle to the top of Mount Olympus (touch the roof of Cyprus) over 3 days towards the end of September and we will be organising a challenging training ride at the end of each month in order to check on our progress.”
Mrs Phillips added: “I have had several ladies contact me since our adventure last September so I am keen to get a decent sized group to cycle with, and don’t worry if you have not been on a bike for a while as we will cater for all levels. The aim is to have fun whilst getting fit at the same time.”
