Beware First Time Temp Residence Renewals

Hi, thought I would post this just in case anyone else falls for the same issue.
Started first temp residence last Jan and completed it in Feb, pink ID issued with date started 18 Jan 16, we went home after this Xmas on 9th Jan thinking ok we go home before it runs out and when we get back we will get up to 90 days to complete our renewal however when we got to Metahan crossing we were informed that our residency actually ran out 11th Dec 2015, stupidly we never checked the dates in our passports which did state 11th Dec which is rather strange as I was still working in the UK on that date, we came out permanently on 16 Dec 2015. It would appear that they backdated the application rather than run for a year from when we either applied or from when it was issued, we very nearly didn't get home as they wanted the fine to be paid there and then however as we didn't have the amount requested in TL and would not accept cards we were allowed to continue our travels and pay on our return yesterday which we did however, even then they tried to double the fine, luckily I had kept the piece of paper that the policeman on duty on our exit had written the fine value. For info every day in the country after residence runs out costs 85TL which adds up to a considerable amount if out of date for a month as we were. I know we should have checked the dates in our passport however if this post can stop anyone else falling down the same hole it is worth posting.

Thanks for the advise. One question - When should a person start the renewal process. I guess 4 weeks before or longer?

It's meant to be 30 days before expiry, I've done it this far in advance many times.
Re the 1st post, when we did our residency in 2005 it took 3 months from start to getting the stamp in our passports and the visa was backdated to the date we started the application.

We lost 6 months on our second renewal because we were in the middle east at the time.
Not the same topic but the same happened with our car tax.

Just paid a fine of 2624.15TL for over running my residency by 31days. Yes I know!! very silly of me but I had my reasons for what it's worth. I knew it was due for renewal at the end of December, but over Christmas/New Year I was struck down with the flu, followed by a bad back which left me unable to drive. And as we had been to the South just prior to Christmas, I wrongly assumed that I was allowed/given 90days. Big mistake!!
Then when I resently tried to renew my residency which would be my 6th year here, I was informed that the 90days rule didn't apply, and a fine was imposed and told to go to the Imagration Office to make payment. At that time I was 28 days over due and not the finnal number of 31days.
I was well p***ed off, but I excepted that the fine would have to be paid. At that time my fine was 2380TL for the 28days.
Now this is where the fun and games start and makes me wonder if; anyone in authority here in the TRNC knows what exactly are the rules or law as laid down. Firstly I was told that there was currently an armistice on all fines imposed, and if I went to the Immigration Department now my fine would be reduced to 1840TL which was much better than the first imposed sum of 2380TL. So off I went to the Imagration Department in Lefkosia. There only to be turned away as the offices had been closed due to the rush of people taking up the offer of the amrmistice on fines. I was told I should go to the Metehan crossing where I would be able to pay my reduced fine of 1840TL. At the Metehan crossing I was told; I could pay my fine but the amrmistise rule didn't apply, it was now back to 2380TL. In the knowledge that the armistice was on going for the next few days and in the hope of paying the reduced amount, I seeked further advice. To which I was told to return the following day to Metehan and it would all be sorted.
This I did after several phone calls had been made by my contact to Imagration officials regarding this so called armistise on fines, but resigning myself to go back to Metehan and pay the full fine of 85TL for each overdue day to clear the matter up, and get on with renewing my residency.
At Metehan I was taken to an office to make my payment, in there after much discussion with officials I was told that; as I was a resident staying in the North, about to renew my residentcy I had no need to pay a fine and should return to Kyrenia police station to submit my application after the coming weekend. This I knew could and would add more days to my now over due application and subsequencly increase my fine by each day 85TL. I wanted this matter cleared up now that very day, so I called my contact regarding what I was now being told who in return spoke to several Imagration officials at his end. They informed him that what I was being told at Metehan was not correct, and to clear the matter up I would have to pay the fine in full.
I returned to the Metehan payment office and handed my phone to the official asking him to listen to what I was being told by my contact back in Kyrenia. After listening to what he was being told the Metehan official accepted that what he had told me was indeed incorrect and would take my payment. Which I then made, but now due to all the misinformation my fine was now not the original figure of 2380TL but after adding three (3) more days due to all messing around it was now 2624.15TL which I duely paid, then to test if all was ok crossed the boarder to the south and then returned to the north and was given my 90days!!!
I rest my case, the goal post moved yet again!!!
