We usually use gas in the blue bottles for our heaters. Today I went ot the shop and they only had gas in green bottles. I was told it was the same gas, just a different supplier. Is this correct?

(The gas seems to work OK in the heater, though the pilot light is more difficult to ignite when you switch on)

Yes they are correct, Both green and blue bottles contain the same type of gas, just two suppliers.

Just out of curiosity, (I know "LPG" is "LPG") but what is the norm? Back here in the UK, there is the choice of Butane (usually blue) bottles or Propane (orange/red) bottles - it can make a difference when being used outdoors depending on temperatures, hence the option...
(Then you go for a "Patio Gas" bottle, and often they're green!)

Maybe it's just us, however we found you get less smell / fumes with the blue bottles.

Dark green bottles - Jet Gas

Light blue bottles - Intergas

Light green bottles - Koop gas

I do not know which gas they are filled with, but this is not relevant as all three contain the same type of gas.

If you must know then I suggest you ask one of the gas companies

In the UK Propane (red bottle) is under higher pressure than Butane (blue bottles). As a result the red bottles are for exterior use only.
I thought it might be the same here, but in Cyprus it seems that the colour coding indicates only the brand.

Thanks for those that replied. Anyone else had the problem with the pilot light? (It keeps going out when you ignite it, though after about 10 minutes effort it does stay lit).

Looks like the thermocouple.

To be a little more accurate, operating pressures differ - propane's operating pressure is higher - and therefore different regulators are required.
However, when stored as a liquid in a tank, it also exerts a greater pressure than Butane at the same temperature (naturally, comparing like for like as to how full the tank is...)

Subsequently, temperature is often the deciding factor in choice, both for workmen and campers/caravanners (many caravanners use propane) = see here and here...

Anybody noticed that the price keeps creeping up.

Well it wasn't the thermocouple ardstaraway!

When the gas ran out I changed the bottle, I took out a light green one, and put in a dark green one, it lit first time with the igniter button, and the pilot light stayed lit.

Sounds like some moisture or air got in a bottle. Anyone else had that problem with the gas here?

Do you mean on the gas room heaters? I have experienced this problem lately....light goes out when releasing pressure on starter button/knob.
I had thought that it was just built in obsolescence...inherited the heaters when I bought the house 9 years ago so they must be old.....but this year is the first time I've used them. Will give your persistent method a go!

Yes that's exactly the problem on a gas room heater.

I solved it by getting one of those lighters with a flexible end. If I poked the lit end at the pilot light to warm the pilot up, then it would light and eventually stay on, but it took a few minutes. I thought the thermocouple might be failing, but then when I changed the gas bottle it worked fine again.

Thanks....I tried cleaning up the pilot with small wire brush and even some WD40! No joy even though I held knob down until heating element was glowing red, the pilot went out as soon as I released pressure. I will have a go at preheating with a long lighter as you suggest.....fingers crossed!
