If you walk over the border at Ledra Street AA Optical do not charge, even for those under 60.
And they are very through.

Girne state hospital has an eye clinic and they will test your eyes and give you a written prescription for free. The test equipment is the same as that in the UK at Exeter eye infirmary.

Not a lot of difference from waiting in corridors at an NHS hospital then when you're not an emergency. I know what its like re 6am start. Got there at 7.15am once to see orthopaedic surgeon and was about 25th in line.

I was lucky then, last Wednesday I turned up at 11:45 and was seen straight away, unfortunately all through translation error, I was supposed to be seeing the doctor near the x ray to discuss my test results and got confused that I needed an eye test which gave the same results as I had from specsavers a year ago. She was very thorough and pointed out one eye is more straight which I knew when I wanted to wear contact lenses. She has even advised I go and have pictures taken at lefkosa state.

We made an appointment by phone after seeing the optician and getting her card. Queue was only 2 or 3 people and that was about 11a.m.
We kept the appointment and was seen almost straight away. The doctor spoke perfect English and the prescription was free.

The eye test and prescription were free.
Haven't got her number but you can get her card from the eye clinic in the right hand corridor of the hospital.
