I have it on good authority that, With effect from 1st May 2017 the Road Fund Licence is being abolished, Petrol will go up by 40 KUROS per litre to compensate the government's loss of revenue.

If you have unused road tax, there will be NO refund however,if your tax is due before May 1st you must continue paying road tax as before.
Can I suggest, that if you fall into this category, minimise your loss and apply for 6 months instead of your normal 12 months !!!!

What if the car is off the road up to and including that date . Ie parked on the drive and not in use because you are in the uk ? Can't see how you pay the back tax as it would be difficult . Is that illegal . If you can't claim the tax you paid up front then surely it works both ways . Would be interested in any reply

Assume you've read Trevor Hughes missive as well then Mollie. Guess who's present Tax runs out on 31st March so will have to apply for 6 months, as well as pay the extra 40kuros a litre. I didn't know you could get it for 6 months!!

It will be interesting to see whether charges for car hire will go down...
I doubt it, and that will be a relatively small (extra) profit to the hire-car owners, but those hiring (mostly visitors/swallows) will be stung...

For once in my life I get the luck of the draw - my road tax runs out 30th April!

Don't get too excited, 'Experiential Learning' tends to make me think that they are quite likely to change their minds in fairly short order!

A Turkish Cypriot friend told me that about 35-40% drivers in North Cyprus do not pay their road tax.
That being the case it looks like the Government has given up the fight of trying to enforce this law and decided to put TL 0.40 on fuel to make sure everybody pays....

A similar change was suggested in the UK a few years ago, it didn't happen for two reasons as I recall:
1) There was a rise in fuel costs at the time
2) More sophisticated ANPR technology made it easier for the Police to identify tax dodgers on the road.

Given the current significant problem of evasion of the road tax the new system should achieve a net increase for the TRNC treasury to outweigh the road fund licence plus less bureaucracy to fund bringing savings too...

In the end I don't think they will reverse the decision - if the sums add up - and if they don't presumably they will up the fuel duty.

They will probably run out of petrol in the last week before it goes up in price. Will it be cheaper to go south and fill up if you have already paid for insurance?

The current price of petrol in the ROC is €1.25 per litre, equivalent to approx. 4.91 TL per litre - (or approx £1.07 per litre).
So maybe it will still be cheaper here in the TRNC.

Another point:
Under the current system it is necessary to have an MOT and emissions certificate in order to get road tax.
The new system may encourage some drivers, perhaps of old un-roadworthy vehicles, to not have their cars MOTed.

What about people with Central heating run off diesel? as far as I am aware, there is no difference between the price at the pump and that delivered for heating?

We got pulled over the other night near to Escape beach by the police checking purely on tax certificates, so they are striking while the iron is still hot.

Typical,paid my years tax a month ago,at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask

The police sit on the roundabout on top of the tunnel in girne and check emissions and tax at least once a week. Nice little earner.

It will be interesting to see how /if the roads become quieter at night and what will happen in 'wedding season' when families visit up to five weddings a night

Report in Cyprus Today that "suggestions that annual road tax would be scrapped completely in favour of a fuel surcharge of 40 kuros as early as May, has been rubbished by officials ". As always, what the hell is going on?

Cyprus rumour mill?...Or perhaps officials don't want people to stop buying road tax or only buying 6 months worth in the meantime. Of course, ours is due now so holding off as long as possible to find out the facts. Does anyone know if 6 months tax is much more than 50% of the annual tax cost?

Two things...

1. Up to 60% don't currently have road tax, MOT or Insurance.... as it is... at least if revenue currently uncollected is collected via fuel duty, the TRNC coffers must benefit.

2. The latest article in CT makes it as clear as mud... it starts off saying that RT is not scrapped, instead cars will be chipped (snigger) and ends with unused portion of RT will be refunded if over 6 months - which seems to indicate that it is being scrapped...

This all sounds like somebodies weird science dream....

When and until the dust settles I am not going to believe anything coming from BRS, CT or the Government...

It will be just like the dogs then, nobody did that either or they got the details all wrong.

My border collie dog was happy being 3 years old instead of 13 but most upset he was a bitch. And the other two we have no idea who's who and even though they were brothers the information is different.

Went down to tax the car today & they know nothing about the tax being abolished, said we weren't the first to enquire about it today.

I think we were the silly idiots that were adopted especially by the boys, border collie hand up did collect from a farm

We have to renew this month so will probably do 6 months. Will report back as to cost in relation to 12 month price, if there's little or no difference then it's a no brainer.

Email this morning from BRS, apologising for passing on incorrect information. It is apparently a proposal currently before the Government. They are seeking further confirmation and will report further in due course.

Taxed ours today. 1 year 444TL, 6 months 266TL. Did 6 months,girl on desk said there is a possibility it will be abolished,not sure when though.

So am I reading this right, Car Tax is not being abolished on the first of May then.

I totally forgot that it was supposed to be abolished and went along as usual to pay my car tax / road tax as normal at the beginning of July (ran out on 30th June).
Nothing mentioned about being abolished and renewed for 1yr.

I am assuming they are still thinking about it and how to implement the chip system they talked about.

Better to pay and be safe than not pay and get a fine when you are stopped at a Police Road Check.

Seems this will rumble along in the rumour mill for a while longer as yet so we renewed ours at beginning of July for the year again.

Would be sensible to add the cost onto petrol/diesel charges - no one then escapes.

Drivers of electrically powered cars would... and they are just around the corner (figuratively speaking)...

I think the 'chip' idea was a load of BS dreamt-up by someone too embarrassed to admit that by letting information re the scrapping of Road Tax they had shot themselves in the foot - as the funds would cease immediately and the tariff on fuel would only gradually feed into their already depleted coffers.
