An ecu the brain of a car and the devil to deal with. I have had increasing problems with my Renault over the last three years taking ages to start sometimes sluggish and thirsty on diesel . Tried several garages some mentioned on here. About two weeks ago she decided she did not like the road over the mountain and I ended up having to change down to second gear and sometimes coughed and spluttered. I was afraid to go out in her. Then I tried rede er garage who connected her up to their computer and told me it had 17 faults they could not clear.i managed to source an ecu from Renault in the south at a price of 400 euro plus 250 fitting. The guy at rede er said he could take it to Lefkosia and maybe fix the ecu I laughed at this thinking in the TRNC a guy who can fix ecu right . Anyway off she went and heard nothing for two weeks and thought of some guy with a hammer and chisel fixing my ecu. A week ago I get a call my car is ready Christ I thought can it be? I get to the garage and there she is he tells me to take it for a few days and pay later .
Off I go bloody hell I think it's like it was when it was new the turbo whines starts straight away and she flies up hills. I'm in love with her again. Pay the bill 400 lira wow. Note to self don't be an arse and have faith in this country they are getting ther and catching up don't underestimate people. No I have no connection with the garage but I will be going nowhere else in future. Thank you Edener.

Good to hear of a happy ending, but it's amusing how acronyms can be interpreted - on seeing the topic title, my first thought was "European Currency Unit - now what's that about; you don't hear that term much now, it's usually Euro...."

The ECU (currency) was a bookkeeping currency use by the EU between 1979 and 1999 when it was replaced by the Euro.

Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is a generic term for any embedded system.

But specific to the automotive industry Engine Control Unit. The modern vehicle has a large number of ECU’s linked together in a vehicle wide network. The modern BMW has in the order of 90 ECU’s..
