Number plates on hire cars

Is their any reason that hire cars that used to have red number plates have now changed to ordinary plates finishing in Z. I always gave red plates bit of lee-way as knew they probably didn't k ow exactly where they were going. Is there a proper reason for the change or just some civil serving with sod all to do thinking "I'll do this" ?

Hi, I noticed that, and thought that it might be to bring them into line with the South, but as I haven't studied the South side's hire plates, I could be way off!

I was told it was easier for the speed cameras to read the plates.

This was introduced several months ago, probably a revenue raiser as the hire cars need to be re-registered at a fee!

I shouldn't worry Mr Caley, your car don't go any where near fast enough to bother the cameras

I decline to answer that question on the grounds that I might incriminate myself
