Bamboo / reeda

Looking after a friend's garden and there is a big problem with bamboo. We got rid of ours years ago by digging it out. Is there anything that will kill it? A local says that you cut it off and pour something into the centre that 'fizzes' but doesn't know what it is. Help !!!
