Can anyone recommend a place to buy and fit a new plate east of Girne?

Coming from Girne, there is a shop set back from the road just before you turn down the left side to go to Taner's Terrace (signposted the Terrace). Not sure of its name but shop front is colourful and has Reklam on the signage.

Had a word with my local Oto Plaker lady and had a new one made and fitted yesterday. She said it was only a matter of a short time before the yellow ones would be declared illegal. When that was published there would be long queues so it was best to get them done now. Charge 20tl fitted. This is in Alsancak.

It appears that whit number plates are going to be the norm, is this correct and is there any further information available?

Seen white plates on hire cars but would like clarification. May then consider getting a set made up.

The lady in Alsancak is called Maria and runs the advertising business before Hur Deniz next to the O'live bar. On LHS going from Girne to Lapta. If you go too far turn into where the Gul Bakery is and go back about 60 yards or so. Apparently first all rental cars were altered, then all brand new cars off the forecourt, then 2nd hand cars which were sold and number plate changed and eventually (not too far hence) all cars will be mandatory. Its to do with being able to read photographs on the speed camera etc. Would rather pay 20tl now than be fined or MOT refused!!

Presume it's then white plates front and back as opposed to white at front and yellow at back?

This could of been a very clever way to check tax and documents, show your documents to get a new number plate made , then the police in a years time can pick up all the yellow plates ones as they will owe over a years tax.

You don't have to show anything, just go into shop and ask for a new one. Reg plate makers are not in the slightest bit interested. Its just as if you had lost or broken your rear plate. I think you are a over suspicious snd1966. In fact you are handed your old one back if you want it.

Spoke to our Car hire Dept about this ;

White number plates for the rear are being rolled in , at present not a legal requirement, but you'll no longer be allowed to buy yellow ones as replacements.

Well, I'm confused after reading this post off I went to "Tin Pan Alley" in Girne to the shop that only sells number plates 25tl. I said I've come for a new back number plate. He said where is your car, came out looked at it and said why do you want a plate there both OK. I said I have to change to rear plate to white. He waved his hand in the manner of forget it. Now, this is a person that makes his living selling number plates, why did he say it was not needed?

As stated above it's not yet a legal requirement and I'm sure will take some time to implement however us Brit's wanting to stay within the law always get things done sooner rather than latter, I did mine this morning but kept the old yellow one just in case they change their minds and revert back again which of course is the Cyprus way !!!

I don't think its a question of us expats getting hot and bothered. Whilst I was having mine done, a local delivery driver came in and had his van done then handed over a sheet with 3 more numbers on, so Its probably a case of pays your money or takes your choice. I'm not bothered one way or another what other people do!!

With all the bad press that TC drivers get regarding poor driving standards, the number of accidents on the road, fatalities etc, I would think it is the wrong move going from yellow to white at the rear.

When the UK moved to reflective plates white was chosen for the front because white shows up best. But the law said that for safety reasons vehicles were not legally allowed to have any white light or reflector showing at the rear unless it is travelling backwards (reversing light). Thus, a white number plate cannot be shown at the rear of the car. Yellow is the next best to white and was chosen for the rear - yellow and black are the next boldest contrast you can get and enables them to be read at the greatest distance.
Also, had white been chosen there would have been more reflection to the driver behind from his headlights at night.

So will we expect an increase in accidents from TC drivers who a) will not be able to determine if the car in front is going or coming or b) get dazzled by the reflection from the new white plate?

Several good points there, worthy of discussion, but regarding your last comment, above, it might at least persuade drivers to increase their distance from the car in front so that their headlights do not actually illuminate the rear number plates!

Asked my "Hire Car" guy about this plate thing today. The white rear plate will have to be on all vehicles by end of this current (2017) year, no exceptions! As for expecting an increase in accidents from TC drivers because of the change I doubt it very much because: a). It is difficult to tell which colour is which when you are concentrating on sending your text anyway - as normal. b). Due to the lack of rear lights on so many car's out here and it seems that hire car's are the worst offenders - you won't be able to see the rear plate or tell it's colour. c). Regardless of Keith's hope that drivers will increase their distance - due to all the road works and increase in vehicles on the road, everyone drives so close behind each other that the rear plate is not visible anyway.

One interesting thing is that the South went down this road of white plates all round about a year ago - the driving on that side leaves much to be desired as well and there has been no increase of accidents accredited to the change in plate colour.

Lodger, your "Tin Pan Alley" guy would throw his hands in the air and say what for - that way you could just buy a new yellow plate and when it becomes law in a few months time he will get to sell you a new white plate - shrewd business man that, must be an ex MP - lol.

Got mine today .. To cut a long story short .. The yellow backing was peeled off the existing plate, cleaned with alcohol and a white backing applied .. 15TL .. The price of a new one is now 25TL

We got ours last Thursday at Tunc in Alsancak
and it cost 15tl. Definitely a new one as they gave us the old one back and it is still in the boot.

Got mine a couple of days ago in Karakum, 25tl each ( they were old and knackered). Note of warning though, if you are due for an MOT soon, before white rear plate become law, and you have white rear plates replaced, you will fail the MOT. How funny is that?

Met Goped for the first time, at the shop, and had a good chat. What nice guy.

The posting from Soner re failing test reminds me of a friend in Uk who paid his VAT early and they wanted to fine him. Amongst all the problems here in Cyprus whole bloody thing is nonsense. Phones, kids not in child seats, bus drivers having lunch at wheel I could go and on, but no way is altering the number plates going to make one bit of difference.

PiD, sorry don't know name of shop, but was coming from Supreme towards Karakum, and it was on the right hand side of main road. Had a big sign on roadside "Oto Plaka" ( I think ). So, coming from the roundabout near Shooters, going past Lemar on the right, it is further up on the left.

Whilst I have no argument with the TRNC insisting that people who live here should take up a TRNC driving licence... I can't see how they can enforce the surrender of UK ones...

What if you no longer have one?
What if you apply for a replacement?
There is no link between the DVLC and TRNC and no information is shared... so what are they going to do if you say you've lost your UK licence? Insist that you apply for one so that they can confiscate it?

I think the flurry of statements translated into English are nothing more than a misinterpretation of what they really meant to say - which is that long-term residents must take-up a TRNC licence and can no longer rely on the UK licence being sufficient for driving in the TRNC. To be fair they are right in that they have no jurisdiction over your UK licence, they can't take it away so you lose it, they can't add points to it and to all intents and purposes it means only that you can drive in the UK/EU etc. Not here long term.

Well there were loads of yellow rear numbers plates on Monday in the south and I don't recall seeing any white ones on the rear of cars...

Of course it would be too soon to establish cause and effect within accident stats - which begs the question just who told you?

Several? I still maintain until it's law in the TRNC and a law that is also retrospective... i.e. one that requires all already registered vehicles to change their rear plates I will keep my powder dry.....

As it stands cars that are not hire cars that have a white rear number plate should fail the MOT test! Because the law says it must be yellow with black lettering... I can see that the red number plates were a technical issue because often with sunlight fading the plates the numbers could not be distinguished not least by speed cameras - requiring a switch...

It is very very unusual for a law to be retrospective... I can understand that they can state from N date all newly registered cars must comply with a new regulation. Requiring all legal cars to suddenly change to a new set of regulations costing the owner money is simply against natural justice. They might as well tell all diesel car owners they must convert to petrol!

Groucho - you may be pleased to know that concerning the law in the ROC:

"The new law on vehicle registration plates came into force on the 3rd June 2013.

It requires that NEW motor vehicles registered on or after that date will have to fit the new style plates. Those fitted to cars will be white front and rear and conform to strict guidelines regarding size, font etc. The month and year of first registration in Cyprus is included on the plate.

Those plates that are already fitted to vehicles do not have to be changed unless they need replacing through loss or damage or the owner wishes too.

Ok so having changed my rear plate from a yellow plate to a white plate based on the information above I am now in breach of the law according to todays Cyprus Today page 9 we should have a White plate at the front and a Yellow plate on the rear the article states that "fitting all white plastic plates is not legal"

In the TRNC, the current legislation is for cars registered before 1 June 2017 to have plastic number plates which must be White at the front and Yellow at the rear. These vehicles have until 2027 to fit the new plates (see below).
If the car was registered after 1 June 2017 or if a plate is replaced due to damage or missing both plates must be metal and white with a blue left hand margin embossed with the number of the licensed plate provider.
Fitting all white plastic plates is not legal. According to the article on page 9 of Cyprus Today.

I took my car for mot a couple of weeks ago and had new plates fitted as per instructions from mot inspector 3 years ago - the new ones were both white and plastic.

Needless to say, the car passed

Friday took my classic car for m.o.t car fitted with white plates, told sorry very nice car, but no m.o.t .! wrong plates fitted now Black plates with sliver letters required for all classic cars,front and back. Sent off to get new plates. on my return same guy in m.o.t. office say's all O.K. and gives the paper work back with m.o.t. did not get out of his seat in the office or check car for new plates. Total Joke
