My Road Tax runs out today, Thursday 29th June, so I went to renew. Two out of 3 tax windows open and fairly short queues for each, and the queues were orderly with no-one pushing in!
My request to renew was rejected - "too early, come back on Monday". I pointed out that my tax runs out today and after that I was not insured, but she would not budge.
I left the window and re-checked my docs, but it clearly stated: 28/06/2016 - 29/06/2017, so I joined the queue at the other window. I spoke to the chap in front of me about what had just occurred and, when it was his turn, he spoke to the woman behind this window, and then told me that I have 1 month to renew! I said,"but I want to pay now". When it was my turn I handed in my old tax certificate, paid the 215 TL requested and received my new tax disc.
Can anyone throw any light on this? Do I really have to wait until the month after my tax has lapsed before I can renew?
And, card and cash are acceptable.

My Road Tax runs out on June 30th so I went in earlier this year (week ago) rather than on the last day as I did last year. I was not able to renew but when I spoke to management they pointed out that I could renew during the month of July or Temmuz as it is marked on the tax disc.
"and after that I was not insured" ... I am not sure what you mean by that statement. Could it be that your auto insurance is no longer valid if the road tax has expired? I will check with my insurance agent in case that is so.

I was in there at about the same time today. If you went to the 2nd window (next to the driving licence window) then I can only advise to avoid that one. It appears the staff member is clueless. Went to renew the road tax for a friend in March this year and was told the vehicle needed an MOT. Duly paid the money, took the car to my local garage, got a call from the garage to say the MOT was not due. Went back to window 2 to ask for a refund. Not possible as they can only refund my friend in person unless the refund is over TL20,000 in which case they could refund me directly - strange but perhaps something got lost in translation .....long story but friend is unwell in the UK and not likely to fly for at least a year..!!!! Advised them that staff training may be a good idea and just got a shrug of the shoulders and purse is a little lighter......

waterline, ref your response:

I assumed that the law in this respect is the same as the UK, where if your car tax is out of date, your insurance is invalid. Perhaps it was a silly assumption!!
I look forward to hearing the view of your insurers.

Ah yes, but the clueless one is probably closely related someone "upstairs" and can do no wrong and are always right, even when they are not!!

My insurer is aware of the renewal procedure and he said that there was no problem, the insurance is still valid if the road tax has just run out. I did not think to ask but perhaps it would not be if I failed to renew during the following month.

I take it the rumour of abolishing the road tax at the end of June was .......... just a rumour?
