with this hot weather i went to have swim in the pool it was like a bath, so i took the temperature it read 35deg. I then looked at accuweather and it says it is 10deg hotter than the same day last year, also on msn news it states yesterday was the hottest day ever recorded in the world (IRAN).

Let's hope it peaked early and we will have sensible temperatures in August!

Seems to be coming earlier every year. It only used to get this hot the last week of July and first week in August. The world's gone mad I tell you, mad!

It's 41 in the shade, in our garden in Karsiyaka, as of 3pm Saturday 1st July. I've never before seen it this hot here on the coast.

Our pool water has now reached over 35 deg, hotter than indoors so staying in.

I measured 46 degrees in the shade in summer 2010 here.

Seriously though, 46 degrees here would mean 51 in the shade in Lefkosa. That didn't happen, surely.

Ah but think about it, every ying has a yang, every up has a down, etc etc etc. With the hottest summers, come the wettest winters. Do we really want what we had this last winter, water pouring down inside walls, being stranded because half the road was washed away and all the rest of last winters palava. Those of us that have lived here long enough to remember the really wet winters, forecast (even if the so called experts didn't) that this summer would be abnormally hot. What is unusual that it has come so early.

I think summer came early last year as well but maybe not quite as hot as this one. I firmly believe in the old "Law of 7", that is that everything comes around in a 7 year cycle. For instance, we live in Catalkoy and all the following temps are in the shade temps! They start at 2010 - 45 - 40 - 38 - 39 - 41 - 40 - so far this year it has hit 43 so I expect another round of "Heat wave" weather later on around the first two weeks of August.
Sophie is right with her for every's but missed one out - Every silver lining has a cloud - lol. Small childs pool (27TL) is keeping the dogs cool, careful use of shutters and curtains is keeping the inside below 33 so far, an hours aircon before bed to cool down the bedroom and then run the fan so it sucks cool air in via the fly blinds is doing the rest of the job.
Looking forward to the rain when it gets here but then I am always looking forward to the rain as it is good for the garden and keeps me from painting and building things so I get a rest too - lol. Don't go out in the direct sun between 11:00 and 16:00 unless you have to, take slower smaller steps when walking, drink lots of water and you will be fine when the hot weather hits us. Take care everyone.

Someone was telling us today that the proprietor of a well-known watering hole in Girne town centre had a fan blowing on his thermostat unbeknownst to himself. That eventually got it low enough to turn on the central heating.

Woke up in the night thinking the place was on fire!

Nice story, but as the fan would only be blowing hot air around I doubt it's true.

Spoke to my daughter in North Norfolk yesterday. On Saturday they were so cold they turned the heating on, and she wore a winter coat and scarf over sweater and jeans to go shopping. In the evening turned thermo up a bit more and went to bed in a pair of winter Pyjams and bed socks. I thought she was having me on but she assured me it was gospel. Pays your money and takes your pick.!!!

There is no „7 year rule“ or “ying-yang” or ¬¬“every up has a down” any more.
We do live in times of a rapid climate change.
Facts are, for Cyprus:
- average temps are up, during the last approx 20 years approx 1 – 1,5 degrees
- average rainfall is down, approx 20 % = waterlevel is going down, wells salinate = desertification in Mesaoria and in all of Cyprus is on the way. So called “drought years” are up from 1 in 5 years to 3 in 5 years.
As the scientist say… the “extreme wheather conditions” are on the rise = heat waves , (local) floodings in winter incl thunderstorms become more common every year. Or, see GB or also Germany… in june generally too warm, parts of germany face a drought, but torrential rainfalls in the north.. and now? very low temps in Juli.
Due to all the air cons (and so on), Teknecik power station works on full power.
Let the world shiver a bit (eg, Qatar) , and this forum is full of complaints about KIBTEK pricing.
Except those who have a PV solar system installed.
Some hints for the use of “low wattage fans” (air beaters).
- Spend a bit more, eg, RAKS. The wattage – air beater performance is much better, less noise, last longer...
- These fans can not build up “pressures”. So, it is better to position them (during night) the “reverse way” close to a window to blow air out of the house (and leave somewhere a window or two open to suck air in) , instead to blow air into the house.

Different up North on Saturday then, bowling outside in T shirt , shorts and sun hats, bowling club bar ran out of beer and cold drinks.

just got back from Seville. 48c and even 40c at 22.00hrs.

I seem to be missing the point here: If I have a fan, in front of an open window, that sucks cool air into the house over the top of my sleeping body and that air filters through the house (gaining heat as it moves through the hot air) and exits through another open window. What is the difference if I turn that fan around and attempt to suck all the hot air out of the house over the top of my sleeping body, so that cooler air can eventually filter in through the other open window?
I do see the reason behind low wattage fans and always use them, remembering of course that fans are for localised cooling and not there to lower the overall temperature of a room. Fans only provide localised cooling by lowering the body temperature after all.
I have no complaints about the cost of electricity provided by Kibtek either, my bill works out to about £15.00 a month more (summertime) than my UK bill used to be and overall around the same as an annual electric bill used to be in the UK.
If we are to believe the Government here then now that the Turkish water is here for everyone (apart from all those who do not have it yet but are still paying the increased price for the privilege of not having it) then we should not worry about drought for the next 30 years and indeed the farmers and countryside will benefit greatly from it in the future. Additionally, once the widely proclaimed Turkish electricity arrives as well the electric prices are "supposed" to drop dramatically also.

As i said, these fans cannot build up pressure, the longer the distance to the next open window , the lower the “net circulation” (in m³).

You do joke, or? The “75 million tons a year” project did cost 1,2 billion dollar.1. 75 million tons are not sufficient for (the now practised) agriculture at all. 2. Over 20 years calculated, this is approx 1 dollar a ton (the water itself from turkey not calculated.. a present for cyprus ) + pumping and distribution in cyprus, it comes to the often damned 5-6 lira, say 1,30 euro a ton. Not a single eg, potatoe farmer can pay that.

Additionally, once the widely proclaimed Turkish electricity arrives as well the electric prices are "supposed" to drop dramatically also.

Electricity prices in TR stands at 11,20 us dollar cent per kWh, plus VAT. That comes to say, 50 kurus per kWh. Certainly this is not “dramatically lower ” and the cost for an electricity line and connection to the Cyprus system incl transformer station, is not included. So, at its best, nothing will change.

So there you have it. The future looks brighter every day.....

So effectively, disregarding entirely the fact that the cooling properties of a fan are solely reliant upon the movement of air across the skin, you are advocating that it is better to suck hot air across your body than blow cool air over it? Sorry, I still don't understand this.

I totally agree that no farmer can afford to pay the new rate for the Turkish water - as you read the NC papers can you let me know what rate they are going to be charged for water used for agricultural use? I have yet to find any mention of this in Kibris.

It would be nice to think that should the Electricity come from Turkey that nothing - regarding the price per Kwh - would change. However, I seriously doubt that the prices would remain the same, where there is a killing to be made and a new car to be paid for, prices will always rise. The big benefit would be the closure of the existing power stations, maybe then the yellow band of chemical hazard would vanish from the NC coastline.
