Sun Stroke on Boat Trip

A friend of mine on holiday here went on one of the boat trips from the harbour and his daughter got sun stroke. I did warn him that the boat trips can be very deceptive and to cover up and make sure that they get shade. Anyway he took her to a doctor who put her on a drip and fluids. It cost him 650TL. Would you say that is a reasonable cost as he feels that he may have been ripped off? Someone told him that if he had gone to the local hospital it would be less than 100TL?

What price do you put on your child's well being? the man clearly ignored your advice about the boat trip/sun and his daughter has suffered as a consequence . He only has himself to blame, common sense should tell you that the sun is hotter and stronger here, and take the necessary precautions.
As for hospital costs 650 TL equates to £141, he had a prompt response and treatment to ensure his daughter recovered with no further ill effects, it may have been cheaper at the local hospital, I do not know, may be someone else can tell you. If he has holiday insurance perhaps he can reclaim it. However I ask my original question what price do you put on your child's well being?

the question was not what the friend thinks what would be price for a childs well beeing, the question was
Would you say that is a reasonable cost as he feels that he may have been ripped off?
i do not think so.
he could have choosen the local hospital... which would mean he may gets a reduced, subsidised (and maybe slower) treatment to the cost of the NC taxpayers.
if it would be 1650 TL, ok, that would be a rip off.
650 for a tourist is fair for a treatment which most probably took its time... .

I concur with all the remarks as above. RIPPED OFF?? Its his daughter health and she obviously was treated quickly and we assume correctly. If your friend has Holiday Insurance for the family (and it would be foolhardy if he hasn't), then I think the charge was very fair.

A friend on holiday in Turkey was recently hospitalised from the hotel to a private hospital.
Their travel insurance in the small print says they are not covered for private hospitals.
Read the small print in the policy.

Strange as you dont normally have to pay in a government hospital. Hence the reason you take out insurance as private treatment is often superior and faster.

It would be interesting - and useful! - to know the names of the Insurance Companies which did pay for Private Hospital treatment, and those that didn't...

I will found out. The hotel was in Belek. Their insurers have definitely refused to pay for the private hospital even though it was the nearest hospital to the hotel.
She us still undergoing blood tests in the UK for a bacterial infection.

Thank you for all your replies. Yes I guess that he was irresponsible but all those that have kids will know that they tend to do their own thing and no matter how many times you tell them to do something they don't always do it (i.e keep your hat on). We live here and know the extremities of heat and are somewhat used to it, whereas our guests and holidaymakers aren't. The Boat trips are very deceptive and I know a few people who have suffered as a consequence (some locals!). I absolutely agree that the child's health comes first and I am sure that he regretted his lack of responsibility and it is a painful lesson learnt. Albeit, I for one do not like being ripped off and I am sure none of us do. So it was really a question about whether the cost for the treatment was fair so that others will know in the future where to go for treatment at a fair price.

Goodness, the only thing I got for sun stroke in the UK in 1976 was loads of water and bed rest, oh, and a day off school !
