Mouflon not goat

Sat on a patio watching the world go by when around the corner of the house came this goat with our dog in hot pursuit. Our Turkish cleaner decided it needed help as it was very thin and in distress. She took it home and eventually took it to her friend who is a vet. It appears out goat was in fact a mouflon.A young female who is now receiving medical attention until being released back in the wild. I know they have then in the trodoos but not in lower Ozankoy. It's magical I do so love this little country.

There are Mouflon in the North but I think they have all been brought across from the South some time ago - I am very sure of this having seen some in the back of a white truck passing South to North at a crossing point whilst the police/customs were taking pictures of them. Some years back mind you. It would be nice to think that the young female you have seen is the result of local breeding.

Very interesting but worrying that she was in such poor condition how will you know where to release her so that she joins her family & can find enough nourishment?

Can you send me your number or call 1190, the wildlife support line. Our professionals would definitely like to come and check her out and provide assistance if we can.

Have had a great response from Tashkent nature reserve. Thank you frontalman for contacting them.I assume it was you. They have now seen photographs of the MOUFLON and identified it as a goat. The colouring is all wrong.
Seems we created a bit of interest as there are no Mouflon in North Cyprus. They are all Greek speaking and only travel as far as Leftke. My cleaner gave me duff information or we lost something in translation. Anyway I am pleased that it has brought to our attention the good work done by Tashkent nature reserve who are always available to help with endangered species. whoops what a mistaka to maka. Where's David Attenborough when you need him

There are mouflon in North Cyprus... On a Kuskor outing earlier this year we were treated to the spectacle of breeding pair in the TRNC portion of the lower slopes of the Troodos mountains by Yesilyurt. This event was photographed be several Kuskor members whilst we were closely observed by the Turkish army patrolling the border zone in the hills.

I happened to have Kemal's number which I forwarded to you. That was the extent of my involvement, I'm afraid.

As a matter of interest, the way to recognise mouflon is two-fold... 1. They look like large sheep with a coat of curly wool in the normal pale off white colour range unlike goats... 2. Their very broad horns extend out from the front and curl backwards behind their heads.

I've found the photos we took of a Mouflon and need to modify my description somewhat, they are multicoloured with a paler underside... see photo

Technically it's Kuşkor pronounced "cush-cor" (meaning bird group)

Which is the name of the North Cyprus Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature
