Hi. Has anyone brought a sewing machine back from the in their handluggage. I'm flying from Birmingham with Turkish Airlines.

What are the maximum dimensions and weight restrictions for my baggage?

In Economy Class you can bring a single carry-on thatmust have dimensions of no more than 23x40x55 cm and a maximum weight of 8 kg. Business Class passengers and Elite Plus and Elite card cardholders can bring two pieces carry-ons that must each have dimensions of no more than 23x40x55 cm and a maximum weight of 8 kg. Hi. It fits inside my hand luggage which is which is in the limit allowed. and weighs 2 kg less than my allowance (8kg allowance - 6kg machine). My worry is that they'll take it off me when I get to security. It's new. I don't want to bring it in my suitcase because the one I came with was totally trashed!

Can you not ring Turkish Airlines and ask their policy on sewing machines. Also ring the airport you will be travelling from and ask their advice on this security question. Otherwise it is loads of bubble wrap and polystyrene, then wrap really really well put in a suitcase which is filled full so it can't move about or get damaged by other heavy goods. Most sewing machines bought today are well wrapped in their transport boxes anyway, so see if the shop you buy it from has one boxed that has not been opened yet. You take the risk that it is all complete but at least it should get there in one piece. If arriving via Larnaca no change of planes so only a chance of damage on loading and unloading to/from plane. The alternative is to buy a model in the TRNC that you can download UK instructions for.

I brought a 240 volt drill as hand luggage and when I got to security, they sent me back to check it in as they would not allow it.
You can check it in and have it marked as fragile, and hope for the best.

I bought a new sewing machine here, and took my old one back to the UK in my hold luggage, I removed the needle and packed it into the polystyrene that the new one came in. It made it in one piece.

Yes I brought one out to Cyprus with Turkish airlines, it weighed 7 kgs, I rang them to check and they said just remove the needle and it was ok.

Just a quick update. I rang Turkish Airlines customer services again today! I had to spell out the work Sewing Machine (as in S is for sugar.....), question was it battery operated? No it's powered by electric through a plug and socket. Answer so it's battery? No (repeated). I told him it weighed less than handluggage allowance and needles had been removed. A minutes silence then he cam back and said "No it must go in luggage in the hold!" I've tried to find a telephone number for Birmingham airport to check with security and nothing. I did find an email address so sent one asking them. Acknowledged and told me it could take 28 days to give me an answer. I've decided I just can't win! Happy days....
