We've had them all Summer and put ant powder down where they seem to be coming in. This works but then they find another way in. Sally read on the internet that ants hate fresh mint leaves, which we have in the garden so we put mint leaves down everywhere. Guess what - no more ants.

Thank you for the mint tip, Frontalman, certainly worth a try as a deterrent.
At the moment, using Sertex (orange aerosol), which suggests that it lasts for up to 3 months. Been spraying around door and window surrounds, and if I find the ant nest, spray directly there. It does work, as although you may still find insects inside, they will be dead. Not keen on using it in the kitchen, so using vinegar and water spray solution for wiping down counter tops, tiles etc., seems to deter them, and it does kill them too, albeit not as effectively as Sertex if you have an invasion.

If you know where the nest is buy some borax from the chemists mix it with some fine sugar and warm water so the sugar dissolves put it in a shallow container near the nest, they can't resist the sugar but the borax will kill the whole nest including the queen.
We have successfully got rid of all the nests this way.

Most supermarkets stock it.
