RoC messing with non EU nationals at laranaca going north

Around 50 non EU nationals that arrived at Larnaca airport were refused entry to RoC at Laranca airport and sent back from where they had come from, because they were due to travel on to the North and said so when asked.

From the article above it seems this new 'regulation' (not law) has now been suspended but as far as causing problems for tour operators that are offering holidays in North that arrive via Laranca and creating FUD, even this will have had some impact.

In a way it is quite 'clever' of the RoC, in that they are not stopping third party nationals at the green line - because that would be a direct and clear breach of the Green line laws between the RoC and the EU. By stopping them entering Cyprus at all at Laranca they are avoiding such a direct clash with the EU. Long term such a 'regulation' would not in my view stand up to legal challenge as it is so 'arbitrary' and inconsistent and basically at the moment simply requires third party nationals arriving at larnaca to just say 'no I am not visiting the North' and then visit anyway (still no checks at all on South side of Metehan crossing coming south to north), I was there today). However in terms of causing FUD then its an effective tactic.

However should such a 'regulation' stay in force and withstand legal challenge, then it could cause some problems for some UK citizens in the north post Brexit who like to be able to use Laranca to come and go from Cyprus.

Interesting ttoli. So where did they park the coach on the south side when checking passports ? On the north side they have the whole separate slip lane on the left for coaches and the like but there is no such on the south side ?

I came back across yesterday around 7pm ish I guess and it was 'as normal' on the south side coming north, except there was no 'chicane' in place - just drove straight through as normal, no south personnel and no checking of any kind at that time.

Would they be turning back people staying at hotels built on TC land in the south and planes landing onto parts of both airports I wonder.

I live a sheltered life here in Dipkarpaz and did not know the meaning of FUD - I looked it up!!!
Hahahaha!!!!

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=FUD

28/10/2001 · Although "fud" is widely accepted in Scotland as being a slang term for the female reproductive organs, it is generally used.......

It did also enlighten me on the meaning you had in mind, Erol!

Thanks DG. I must also have lead a sheltered life South of the border as I did not know it either! (Scottish/English border I mean!) but its "polite" meaning is very descriptive.

Not bothering to look it up, I interpreted it as "foul-ups & delays".......

FUD = fear, uncertainty and doubt. A periodic disruption to travel companies and individuals that seek to travel to Cyprus via Larnaca and then visit the north. even though such is almost certainly not legally defensible in medium or long runs, does serve a purpose of sorts. The chance, even if remote and small, of people being refused entry in to the RoC via Larnaca, will have some impact. However in my view implementing such 'policies' knowing they are not legally sustainable in the medium or long term, just to cause disruption through creating a degree of fear uncertainty and doubt also have a cost in terms of the image of the RoC externally.

I suspect that - unfortunately - the visitors/victims will (in the main) only complain to their families and friends, which will merely result in dissuading others to visit - they will not strongly and repeatedly complain to all the news media and their MPs, continuing to do so until the image (and prejudiced activities) of the ROC do get the publicity they deserve...

As I understand it the policy was suspended after only one day of being implemented exactly when a tour group of Israeli tourists , who were due to go north after arriving via laranca were refused entry and then complained to their embassy , who in turn complained to the RoC foreign ministry and that led to the 'temporary suspension' of the policy. The RoC is 'palling up' to both Israel and Russia currently and they are probably the two biggest non EU nations sending organised tours via larnaca that also have itineraries in the north. In any case agencies like the EU and the UN may not say much but they are not blind either imo.

Nor remotely interested in the plight of the north either Erol judging by the response since 64. Now it's just a jolly for the officials and somewhere nice to go in winter

On the left hand side , just past the booth/turning for the UN.
