We have burnt fig wood we have cut down without any problems, it had been cut about 10 months previously.

Fast, we usually mix it with other wood. The thinner branches are good kindling especially when a few dry pine cones are chucked in.

Must be your fig - ours doesn't give off any unpleasant odours but then we do season it well before use.

The same applies when you are picking figs to eat - there seems to be more sap produced in the heat of the day, so it's best to pick the fruit early in the morning, before things warm up too much. I don't know whether the same applies to cutting up the wood, although I would have thought that if the wood is seasoned (dried out) there shouldn't be any sap present anyway.

Whenever we cut the branches we do it very carefully and leave them for at least a day on the ground before moving elsewhere (and several months before using as firewood). Start from the bottom and work up to avoid sap dripping on you. If any of the milky sap gets on your skin it must be washed off immediately. As Keith says, it seems to be best to cut early morning or late evening and in the shade. The same applies to Oleander, I got very nasty blisters after cutting it last year and of course it (and Lantana) must not be used as firewood.
