I'm glad you used inverted commas. There is another article about the coffee shop GC owner. Both are enlightening. Can't be that bad can it? Give me 600 euros per month and a house and some land to farm and I might move there.

Well at least they aren't enslaved Greeks..... Although reading the comments you would think that is how they are seen by some.

They don't see themselves as 'enclaved'. Of course if you are old and frail it does not matter what nationality you are. You can't buy everything in Dipkarpaz, but then it is the same in every village, TRNC, England, Germany etc. etc., but like in all villages, neighbours help each other. when somebody goes into town they check with their neighbours, it they need something from Magusa, share produce etc. When my neighbour makes any preserves, she gives me or the Greek lady down the road a pot. The Greek lady shares whatever she has. At Easter I bring her hot cross buns and she gives me the Greek Easter bread with a coloured egg on top as well as sharing it with some Turkish neighbours too. that's how it works, well that's my experience.

It's good to know the old folks are being cared for but the fact that young GCs are moving there from the affluent South must mean that life isn't that bad. If there are three young guys married to three sisters that's 3600 euros between them as grants from the GC govt, no housing costs, land to farm, goats and sheep to eat, a coffee shop to provide further income, plus (up until now) free food deliveries from the UN - nice work if you can get it!
What an old cynic I am!
