The weeds are starting to grow again now.

Does anyone know where I can buy Knockout weedkiller in the Girne area ?

Yes,I quite agree - I get a Turkish brand from the local Feed Merchant in Alsancak, who stocks all manner of pest control chemicals, I didn't mention that 'cos the op asked for 'Knockout'...

if this weedkiller is similar to Monsanto's "Roundup" - I'd think twice about using it. Studies have indicated it can cause cancer and of course ongoing environmental damage. An alternative is plain old salt or you could use a controlled heat source (handheld sodering gun) to kill those weeds all the way to the root.

I totally agree with kayce . Simply disolve ordinary salt in boiling water and pour on weeds. Cheaper, does not damage the environment nor hurt animals. Do be careful though not to get it on plants you want to keep! It is ideal for cracks in paving etcc.

If you're not bothered about ever growing anything - ever again - in that patch of soil, then of course salt is fine, and caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, AKA Drain Cleaner) is even more effective, sprinkle that into the cracks in your paving stones and you'll never see another weed there! (Note: Salt is Sodium Chloride - a combination of two lethal elements!)

However, do not underestimate the environmental effects of salt - just because it is a familiar household product - and edible - doesn't mean that it is automatically kind to the rest of the 'Natural World' including insects et al.

Systemic weedkillers do, at least, only affect the organisms with which they come into direct contact - that may, unfortunately, include any insects which are actually on the plant that you treat, but that's it - there is no lasting legacy in the soil, because (so I'm told) soil itself deactivates the substance - in fact accidental ingestion is treated by feeding the patient an appropriate amount of soil They are best applied with a 'dribble bar' on a watering can, so that you can be very specific and accurate with the application.

Most strong chemicals (including 'domestic' ones) can be harmful / toxic to humans in one way or another, so it behoves one to take appropriate precautions when handling and using them.

That doesn't mean that you should not use them, just 'Use them Wisely'

Nasty thought, Keith, particularly when some people blithely fill my house with their exhausts!

As for salt, you are thinking of "sowing the fields with salt". Selective weed killing by salt diluted with water is not quite the same as scattering salt whilly nilly. I use 2 or 3 desert spoons for half a litre of water and pour directly onto the weeds or into cracks, being careful to avoid any nearby wanted plants, and I find the effects last two or three months. I use stronger solution for the weeds at the foot of the house adjacent the road. Pour from jug or funnel rather than spray and do not use in windy weather. To be on the safe side water well any particularly delicate or special plants nearby in dry weather , but do not hose down treated concrete for a day or two.

Yup Agent Orange in Vietnam was the forerunner to Roundup...not good

The same side as Girne hospital and opposite the market, next to the key cutting shop is a garden shop who sell it.

I have bought knock out weedkiller in the past from them the man on the corner as you turn down the road to go to Lemar, after Uncle Sam's on the same side.
