One of the posts on Keith's thread about menus suggested one was not tradiontal . But what is traditional???? Turkey is a recent import from - wait for it! - America where it is part of their Thanksgiving festival. In fact any bird is acceptable, duck goose chicken peasant etc. etc. And of course, Swan. At one time the main dish was Boar's Head. Now go find a Boar's Head or a Swan in North Cyprus. Joints of beef, pig and sheep are also acceptable. Pudding are also of ten imported Yule log, for instance, is the French "Bouche de Noel"!

Christmas is a religious Festival for giving and helping the less fortunate. It may also be for relaxing a little and eating what you like, not for supporting large shops and hotels. If your favourite food is just kebab and chips, or baked beans on toast, or curry, or smoked salmon sandwiches on the beach with champagne (my vote weather permitting) eat it and enjoy

Have you not ever tried fried peasant... It goes very well with Shepherds Pie and Fisherman pie or even part of a Ploughman lunch?

Try a little Melba Toast with it, and have Crepe Suzanne for pudding.

Crepe Suzette surely.

It's bûche de Noël, bûche meaning log, as opposed to bouche which means mouth. It's traditional in Belgium and Luxembourg too, and in parts of Germany.

The message contained in the use of Suzanne for Suzette is entirely lost on me as has been pointed out.Perhaps someone would enlighten me as to what it means?

It's RR's fault - she started it with 'peasant', jofra mentioned 'long pig', and what with shepherds, ploughmen et al, it just went downhill from there...

I am still at a loss as to why Suzanne and Suzette being interchanged makes a point as they are both human female names.Ergo, any point being made about long pig,cannibalism et al and a human connection to food dishes does not need a name change.

That's always the trouble with explanations about jokes - the more that you explain it, the less clear (& funny!) it becomes...

You are right of course Keith, jokes rarely survive explanation.Good jokes rarely need explanation.

I did make the connection with cannibalism having read "Long Pig" many years ago.

I guess I just do not get what is so funny about changing names and leave it at that.

Oh dear and all I was trying to do was brighten up a rather dull page! Not to mention myself since I have a rathernasty flu but, and feeling rough. I made a silly mistake about pheasant./peasant and for the sake of good humour tried to turn it into a joke. OK it wasnt too funny, but I did at least try. Then as happens I dropped another -for those who dont know Crepe Suzette is a type of pancake but I put it as crepe suzanne!

And people say I have no sense of humour. I plead illness, and the fifth amendment.
