Cat Trapped Down Very Deep Hole
One of our cats went missing about 10 days ago. We assumed that by now it had died but yesterday a cat's cry was heard from a hole on our unfinished site. A guess, but the hole is probably 30ft deep with a 1ft diameter at the entrance. We have no idea what the hole is for and because I'm recovering from a knee operation I can't do much to help the cat.
We lowered food in a bucket which the cat accepted but jumped from the bucket as it was pulled up.
Any ideas from you about how we can retrieve the cat would be most welcome. Thank You.

You could try putting the cat's blanket or something in the bucket, so that it settles down.
Water is essential in the meantime as well, of course!

Try lowering a plank/piece of wood (joined if necessary) I'm sure it will climb out.

Can you bodge a flip top lid on a waste bin so the cat drops in for food but can't get out by pushing from inside.
a dowel across one side attached with a elastic band or pebble to act has a counter weight to ensure the lid closes should allow the other side to pivot down but not up,
or lower down strips of material tied together that the cat can get its claws into to make knotted sheet type ladder.
Hope you csn understand good luck.

Have you tried the Fire Brigade? They are very kind and have rescued other animals in the time I've been here. Good luck.

A ladder or a knotted roope for the cat to climb up. Dangle something lovely smelling (to a cat!) to encourage it to climb. Do you think it has been down the hole all the time and what has it lived on? (mice i suppose). Even a piece of scaffolding. THere should be plenty of material on a building site.
Send the builder who left an open hole unprotected down to collect it!
Seriously report it to the Muhtar or Police. It could have been a child and it could have been during a rain storm.

That is a very real concern, and the lack of thought by Builders and their workers is frightening, although I doubt that anyone in authority would be inclined to take action on the 'hypothetical possibility' of a human coming to grief!Ragged Robin wrote:...Seriously report it to the Muhtar or Police. Possibly better to shout at your builder!

This is becoming urgent and all these kind, but as yet failed suggestions are not helping the cat at all. The obvious people are the Civil Defense people who have loads of equipment for all sort of events or as someone has suggested, the Fire Brigade. They are extremely helpful. THEN shout at your builder and let the police ad Fire Brigade add their four pennyworth as well. The cat comes first, the shouting comes later!!

Shove the Builder down the hole. But still report it. Not all in authority here are irresponsible and completely ignore health and safety. At least give them the chance.Keithcaley wrote:That is a very real concern, and the lack of thought by Builders and their workers is frightening, although I doubt that anyone in authority would be inclined to take action on the 'hypothetical possibility' of a human coming to grief!Ragged Robin wrote:...Seriously report it to the Muhtar or Police. You might do better to contact the OP - johnerebus - directly, he doesn't appear to have visited the forum since his initial post.sophie wrote:I'm going to plague this thread until I learn the cat has been saved. Stop talking and ACT!!!
It's no good exhorting the Forum as a whole 'To ACT!' - various helpful suggestions have been made, and he may well have actually acted upon them and rescued the cat.
The fact that other posters on the forum are discussing the ins and outs of the problem does not alter or detract from the OP's ability to 'ACT' - and he is the only one able to control the situation

Re: Cat Trapped Down Very Deep Hole
I ydont know johnerebus personally nor where he lives , but he did mention a knee operation and may need help. (Sorry disability again!) Does anyone know him or where he lives.
If it is an estate I suggest someone who lives there tries to find the hole and report it to the autorities. My earlier posts were badly phrased (flu is making me brain fuzzy) I should have said it is important to report the hole to the authorities because there is a risk of another animal or human falling in.

Thank you ttoli for taking the trouble to reassssure us regarding the cat. Not you fault of course, but would it not have been nice to also be asured that action was being taken to prevent some other poor animal or even human suffering a worse fate. Even for Cyprus, and even for a building site, unprotected and lacking warning(I assume) deep holes are really unacceptable.

Re: Cat Trapped Down Very Deep Hole
A Happy Ending.
But only 8 lives left now.
My wife bought a length of wood burning piping (the brown pipe you see in Yapi Shops.) She blocked one end and put wet food in the bottom of the pipe. On the third attempt the cat went into the pipe which was instantly turned so she couldn't escape and up she came.
She was skinny but OK and is now putting on weight daily and purring like... Well purring like a healthy happy cat does.
Thank you for all of your suggestions.

Re: Cat Trapped Down Very Deep Hole
P.S.
Apologies for the late Happy Ending reply but I've had a knee op and been hospitalised for a while.
The hole was covered and hidden by long grass and no one knew it was there. We now know it's an abandoned well which has been made safe and not even a baby ant will fall down it now.
