Help with new laptop microphone

I bought a new HP laptop in the UK last month but when I tried to Skype the other day the other person couldn't hear me. I ve also tested Cortana and that doesn't work either so it is the built in microphone that doesnt seem to be working. I have tried all of the troubleshooting, reinstalled drivers, set up the microphone but no joy. I am not going back to the UK for a few months so am wondering if this ever happened to anyone else and how did you resolve it?

This is a strange one. My experience maybe nothing to do with the problem you are having. In the last say three months, my wife has had the same problem when trying to ring two people in the UK. It works fine for everyone else, so we assume that the problem lies with the two friends. Try ringing someone whom you don't normally ring and see if you have the same problem.

Uninstall Skype, switch off PC , switch on again Then re-install Skype this might work.

Yes i had a similar problem after an upgrade from Skype.

First check that your laptop;- (choose 'sound' option from the control panel - assuming you are using Windows 8-10) is set to the internal microphone:-

Ensure that the 'recording' option is set to 'internal Mic' - a green circle with a tick in it should indicate this as a default setting. The slider bar to the right should rise and fall as you talk - to show it is working.

Then check that Skype is set to the same microphone setting - choose 'options /tools/audio settings. This may entail another re-installation, if you do not see your laptop microphone as an option.

I found that the skype upgrade was resetting itself back to 'none' for some reason, and not picking up the internal microphone on the laptop, but after a couple of re-installs is stabilised.
Hope this helps.

This is one of the reasons I keep clicking on NO now, when Skype keeps asking to install an updated version. I did it a couple of years ago and new Skype didn't recognize the microphone. I still have a problem when trying to talk to a couple of people in UK who have Apple laptops.

Thank you for your replies but unfortunately it isn't just Skype. I uninstalled that previously and it made no difference. I tried Cortana and it doesnt work with that either, telling me that told me I haven't set up the Microphone. I have tried absolutely everything but it still doesn't work so I am guessing it may be a physical problem!

Are there any recommended repairers who could confirm what the issue without invalidating the warranty?
