Does a local will need to be notorised when completed and witnessed?

When we did ours it was subsequently filed in the registry adjacent to the district court in Girne but I cannot remember the cost involved and it probably increases every year anyway. A chance to see a blast from the past with the legal document being laced, red wax applied, and then compressed with a legal seal of obscure design by a bloke who looked like Long John Silver, or it could have been Robin Hood's cousin, Robin B.......d. Just needs to be completed and deposited with Registrar at the court office in Girne.

You do need one each, you cannot do a joint will. If your will is simple ie you are leaving everything to one person or sharing equally between several then it is easy to DIY and there is a pro forma available from around the forums.

Important thing is, YOU MUST HAVE A WILL. If not you stand to loose lots to government.

We used our advocate to draw up wills which some people say is not necessary. Did this purely because we felt we did not want to risk the DIY method and knowing us get it wrong. The value of the property v the advocates charges we felt was worth it. Personal choice.

We reviewed the wills with our advocate first, confirmed all was ok then a stroll to the Girne court offices. Met advocate's secretary went in the office and watched whilst everything stamped up and sealed with wax. Registrar made a point of holding up each sealed will to show wax seal applied. Straightforward.

The important thing is to do it!

As I understand it (cop out!) TRNC Law prescribes how a person's goods are divided amongst his successors.

Foreigners (that's me, and possibly you ) can opt out of this by leaving a properly formulated and witnessed will - preferably lodged with the Registrar as previously described. DO NOT lose the bit of paper that they give you, with the reference number on!

If Foreigners do not leave a TRNC will, then all of their possessions in the TRNC - and that's everything, from your wristwatch and the clothes on your back to your house, car, and Bank Balance - will be divided according to TRNC Law - which could mean that that snivelling nephew, who hasn't even sent you a Christmas Card in 20 Years, will get everything, instead of it going to keep little Tiddles in 'Felix Extra' for the rest of her life

Actually, I'm not really sure whether you can leave it all to Tiddles or not, but you see what I'm getting at - any UK Will that you may have made out will not apply to anything that you possess in TRNC.

Has the will got to be transcribed into Turkish ?.

Did my own last week,Have a format for your will Typed out the relevant details you need 2 copies both witnessed by 2 people with passport details address and both signatures (They dont have to go to the will office with you) you will need you passport and 68tl in stamps,You may need to make an appointment.The office if up the stairs at the law courts walk as if you are going to the front of the courts and go right,at the first left turn the office is to your right(dont go right on the walk way as you would have gone to far)Hope thiss helps if you need a copy of the format telephone on05338403348

Interesting thread. We've had our place 6 years now and have still not made a will. I know, stupid, but we really need to do this asap now.

I've saved the will copy that KeithCaley very kindly put on another thread, so, starting with the form, would someone be so good as to tell me exactly what we do in terms of who, what where and when for a will for me and my other half?
