Istanbul is a long airport and gate to gate can take 20mins plus the transit security times which are probably up to 20mins. Smoking is available on the terrace at the mid section food hall where Carluccios is, on a mezzanine level. You really should pack it in though.

Smoking's like nostalgia - a thing of the past.

I was going to start a thread regarding security.

Please beware, if you are in transit please take enough time to get to your gate! Once you reach your gate they have placed extra security measures in place in your lounge. You go through the first check in, then in the lounge another passport check, then a search of your hand luggage and a search of you with a chemical check. It takes forever, DO NOT leave it until the last minute to get to your gate, be warned!!

We had a similar experience a couple of years ago, we had an hour between arriving at Istanbul and departing for Ercan. Unfortunately the UK departure was an hour late, consequently we sat in Ataturk for 5 hours, plenty of time to take up and quit smoking again! The airport staff could learn a lot from UK airports viz customer care!

I travellled back in February and had just over and hour for the connection. For the first time the buses took us all to a different entrance and when we got to the top of the escalator we were in departures, no extra checks or security at all. Very easy.

There is more than one 'Istanbul' airport, isn't there?

Which airport are people referring to when they say Istanbul?

Do all UK - bound flights use the same airport? - 'cos if not, it would be helpful to mention the name of the particular airport and also the airline...

hi mate, as you are travelling from UK, the security at your onward gate will not have the extra levels of security (that is only for flights to UK with Turkish Airlines). Once you pass security - and there are 3 or even 4 now - different security areas.. if you use the main one closest to the passport control - then at the top of escalator you will see food court immediately to your left. go up the escalator that is over the food court and head half left at toop and that will take you to a smoking area - the one in the centre of the concourse between shops etc is newer but may or may not be en route between your security point and the next gate. Also if you are interested, at the same escalator and behind the top is the HSBC lounge with an ATM which dispenses TL, USD, EUR etc which not many people know about. its the only ATM in ataturk airport airside. The slowest part of transit in all of Ataturk is the security.. so once through its relatively quick. you need 30-40 mins max before departure.
