Well the Buffovento restaurant will be pleased, not. What about all the crazy taxi drivers going back and forth to Ercan? I can't see this staying in effect for long.

I did read some time ago that the Mountain Road was due for a major upgrade, perhaps this is just a temporay measure to enable an extensive overhaul.

We went over the mountain road last Monday, it is hair raising, we passed an accident which looked like at least two lorries had overturned on a bend and a BMW could just be seen under them,, it looked horrific.
As soon as the obstruction was passed it was back to business as usual, cars flying along at ridiculous speeds, what does it take to make some people see the dangers of erratic driving.

Responsibility, common-sense, driving acumen, awareness, following the law - the list is endless. However, I take it your last query was rhetorical!

All the taxi fares will go up and with the Lefkosia road under repairs it will take for ever to get to Ercan.

Just a thought but how will this impact on the people who work at the rescue centre?

You couldn't make it up really could you - putting restrictions on when the other main route to Lefkosia is having 2 and half months worth of roadworks already causing large tailbacks. Also who will 'police' these new rules??!!

I was driving back from Famagusta at around 1pm and it had just happened. It looked terrible as you say. About 5 minutes later we got stuck behind a heavy lorry that couldn't make it up a steep incline and it just stopped!
We made the same journey the next day and chose to use the mountain road further down the coast. Much clearer and safer.

Coming from Kyrenia, a little bit more to the journey but a much safer option.

My neighbor works at Bufavento restaurant he normally leaves for work at 11.30 so how does he get there now? More lorries carrying lighter loads might help. I was hit in the back by a car on Friday near Acapulco turning as I was waiting for the police the lorries were hurtling past and the smell from their over heated brakes was overpowering. Some kind folk stopped and started directing traffic as I was in the middle of the road and didmt want to be hit by a lorry!

Why oh Why are drivers not taught to engage a lower gear, and to keep their feet off the brake pedal when going downhill?
Even in an 'Automatic' you can force it to use a lower gear...

Keith, it cheaper to replace break shoes than a new gearbox.

We were very nearly a lorry sandwich a couple of years ago. Half way down the mountain from the top Arapkoy turn behind a very slow lorry when we realised the lorry behind us was gaining too quickly. Very scary, in the end we just had to pretend we were in a taxi and overtake on a blind bend, fortunately we made it.
I wonder how many will be trying to get through the village (Arapkoy) when this comes into force, I suppose it depends how/where/IF its policed

If the signs are as clear as the timed no entry signs in Ozankoy there's no hope
Well I should have said there's no hope
The locals will do as they have always done
The rest will be confused

Last week there were cars turning right off the main car park in Girne into no entry road we saw 4 going down there and there were buses coming down.

Now that a big polis man has explained the reason why,, Apparently there is a big increase of motorists using the treacherous mountain Rd as a alternative route, due to the Roadworks on Lefkoşa Rd,, This has caused A spate of serious accidents , may not be perfect , but could save lives ,, still think some traffic management could be put in place ,

What became of the road tunnel project that was going to go through the mountain and save about 5km? I recall this being announced a year or two ago. Someone at that time suggested that drilling had already started.

I believe that all the resources for the above have been diverted to the Gondola from the bypass to St Hilarion.

They are waiting until the Northern Nicosia By-Pass has been completed - otherwise it will be a road to nowhere and people will all have to carry a pick and shovel to get any further!

This is nothing yet, wait till all the tourists come with rental cars that’s when the tails back begins and when the tower blocks start filling up in Girne even worse what a shame it’s come to this

I find that most of the tail backs are caused by parents in SUV's carrying a single child to school and of course the large amount of University transports that are around ferrying those poor students back and forth at all hours of the day. The tower blocks will fill and more vehicles on the roads - don't blame the drivers, if the authorities had done their jobs properly instead of making more money at it then the infrastructure would have been put in place before the building permits were granted - but you can't stop progress when it effects your wallet size can you?

There are always options if you do not like living here - return whence you came or move elsewhere. Why do expats attempt to be missionaries wherever they go? Accept the perceived foibles of the locals or move on but please stop bleating!

Can't see the problem, went South this morning and no problems at all going over the mountains via Girne by pass, not the mountain road, although there was a tail back in places it was better driving than on the M18 when they had contra flows there! Just add an extra 30 mins to your journey and go that way instead of the mountain road if you need to go!

Whereas I was told by a "local" who works in the construction industry that the current system is for two weeks while routine maintenance is carried out.
Obviously a case of "Send three and sixpence, we're going to a dance"||:((

As in......Send reinforcements we are going to advance...
Just saying!

This reminds me of the American tourist who got in a black cab at the London Hilton hotel, wanting to go to the Egyptian boy king on-loan exhibition (including gold face mask) at the British Museum, many years ago. He ended up in Tooting Common. True story.
Think about it!

According to CT (page 6), temporary travel restrictions on the Girne-Degirmenlik mountain road (aka Buffovento road) are to be lifted 'earlier than planned'. 'Roadworks on the accident blackspot route would be completed on Tuesday, nearly two weeks earlier than scheduled'. They didn't specify which Tuesday lol.

Now confirmed that traffic ban will be lifted on Tuesday 13 March.
No announcement yet when the massive upgrade to the road - announced on 12 December - will commence!
