I think he was mainly responsible for Darts being the sport it is today, Gord bless'im, rather than just a pub game. I'm not saying it wouldn't have happened without him, but he certainly raised the publicity for darts.
He wasn't liked by a lot of people due to his arrogance, but he knew he was good and wasn't shy about it. My brother was an England international and captain of London darts team with Bobby George in the team, so he knew him well. He liked him.

I loathe darts as it is now, but years ago I thought EB was the bees knees. He was terrific and he knew it, and together with Bobby George they had me glued to the screen. Nowadays I wouldn't set foot into anywhere that had Darts on the TV. They just seem to play like robots whereas EB and BG were real characters.

Those were the days, they brought the sport alive... Eric, John Lowe, Leighton Rees from Ynysybwl, my dads home town...Bobbie George, Jocky Wilson... But yep have to agree Sophie, it is a bit like tennis and maybe other sports, not so much about raw talent. but how to play like a robot..quite sad in a way, and no longer interesting. RIP Eric.
