Glace Cherries

This may not seem to be important to some but I CANNOT make my Christmas cake without these as my hubby is threatening divorce if there is no cake with cherries

So far I have looked in Ileli, Starling (Lapta and Alsancak), Dolmaci and Tempo (Karaoglanoglu).

Please, has anyone seen any in the last few days as I cannot find any at all?

Scoobydo.

If you find them in the North they are very expensive, when we were baking we got them from the South, the cheapest place for baking Items is at a supermarket called Anthenides ( not sure on the spelling ) it is also cheap for most things.

That's the sort of thing the new Tempo Gourmet Deli might sell. Give them a try. I was surprised at the selection they have and yes Bell Foods could very well stock them.

Dried fruit stall at wednesday market in town does something closr to glace cherries, but you have to stone them. They also sell candied kumquats which are an acceptable substitute for the peel, if you don't mind stoning and chopping them.

Tempo Catalkoy had them but when I wanted some last week they had sold out, waiting for them to come in again

Someone got us a cake the other week from a local supermarket, and there were glace cherries on them. They must be around somewhere.

Thanks everyone,

I haven't tried Bells but will do so on Monday.

I looked in Alphamega in the south on Wednesday but they too have sold out.

I am so annoyed with myself as I usually ask my friends to bring some over from UK and totally forgot about it this year

Let's hope that some come into stock soon or 'His Nibbs' will be pretty brassed off

I saw one packet of mixed peel today in Ileli.

could you not use olives and paint them red- most people are so plastered on Christmas day by the time the cake comes round I'm sure they wouldn't notice.
Keith Caley(Most helpful poster on here) will probably know where to get them.

Looks like I will have to buy a cake in UK and bring it back if the boss can't get the ingredients to make a proper one

They had them in the M&S home last Thursday presumably they also have them in the bigger store however they are 3.75 euro a tub!
Now where can I get currants and STONED raisins, I bought some from the market one year and then spent hours trying to get the stones out .

You could try Erdener - near China Bazaar - that's where I got mine last time. Good luck!

Thanks for that will try Erdener & Tempo for currants & raisins, I have been very clever & brought my cherries & mixed peel from UK last week!
I think I also used apricots in my cakes last year because could not get cherries they mix in very well.

Think dates are a really good idea with or without glace cherries.

To save anyone thinking of going to Bells for glace cherries, don't bother.

I went this morning and there is none and was told that 'maybe' they might have some in December

I will check out the market on Wednesday, I WILL find some cherries for my Christmas cake

My neighbour is coming over on the 7th November, would you like me to ask her to bring you some?

Hi Puppylover,

You have just saved me from a potential 'messy' divorce over a cherryless christmas cake

That would be fantastic but please make sure your neighbour does not mind.

If your neighbour is ok with this then I would like a minimum of 125gms, so any size pack will do of at least this weight and I really do not care about the make

I will pm you my telephone number.

I normally find all my baking needs in Tempo Catalkoy but at present they are awaiting a delivery of all these items i.e. cherries, peel and various dried fruits (normally Whitworths) so possibly worth waiting a few days to see what arrives.

Judy, I would be very grateful for a couple of tubs of cherries as I forgot mine when I came back, they are sat on my dressing table at home (to remind me to put them into a tupperware box) like everyone else I cannot find any.

Are you sure your friend will not mind?

All the local supermarkets I use (Erdener/Tempo/Supreme/lemar) all have cake counters-and nearly all the cakes are studded with glacé cherries-I was in tempo today and it was difficult to find a cake that didn't have them on.
I assume these cakes are bought in from somewhere-maybe ask where the cakes come from and go to the bakery with your begging bowls!

At 12 midday today they had 3 small pots of cherries at the original (little) Tempo in Girne - don't all stampede at once!

The ones that they sell at the Wednesday market are actually better as they have more substance to them. I made a 4 foot wedding cake for a young English lady in June using local dried fruit, and she was more than happy.

Yesterday Ileli had 5 200g tubs of glace cherries at 11.95TL. The baking section is by the bread section.
