Has the hunting season started ?

Dont remember seeing anything in the paper . Shot gun being fired very near , its so loud

As per yesterday's Cyprus Today it's every Sunday from today until 30th December, a total of 11 days. The hunters may have up to 3 dogs, hunting is from sunrise to sunset. They may not hunt within 200m of places of settlement and, I believe, within 500m of water (sea or inland lakes/reservoirs). Just watch out for the reports in this week's papers of all the ones that have managed to shoot themselves or a fellow hunter...

I know what you mean - we've had pellets in the pool in the past. You can call 140 if you think that the hunters are too close to your house. That's the number for the 'hunting wardens' who should respond to any reports of hunting misdeeds, like shooting from a moving car window, being in restricted hunting areas and being too close to residential areas.

The sad thing is, wait for the abandoned dogs after the season is over.

The abandoned dogs: At least they will be freed from their rotten life of being tied up and barely fed, given a chance to escape their cruel jailers, even the ones that end up on the side of the road dead will at least be free. I never thought I would say that and I used to cry every time I saw a dead dog, now I think 'at least you will suffer no more pain'

Our neighbors this morning found a trail of blood leading down from the mountains to around the front of our villas and on further investigation and from information from a TC neighbor apparently a hunter shot his own dog whether by accident or deliberate we do not know yet. But my British neighbor found the dog and took it straight to the vets. It was peppered with shot gun pellets but hopefully it will survive. We now need to find out who the owner of the dog is to determine what happened. We will find the the owner that I am assured of after speaking to our immediate TC neighbors who are dog lovers and know who has what in the way of dogs locally.
But as you may all know that these so called hunters are capable of shooting their selves as well as their fellow hunters as the death of a young policeman in Alsancak a couple of years ago shows.

Whilst I do not like hunting and the mindset that goes with it as a guest here I can not do much about it. I do object to being showered with pellets whilst out in the garden as I was a few minutes ago though so the 140 number will come in handy.

This hunter gatherer thing seems to me an almost exclusively male activity harking back to caveman times.

Anyone know of any lady hunters here ?

Do we really need to go out and hunt to kill for food in the 21st.century or is it just killing for pleasure ?

Perhaps Im missing something having been raised a townie and not come into contact with hunting until I moved here.

3 Sundays ago, a car raced up the ravine passed our house, two dogs being thrown around all over the place in the carrier(its an unmade up road) with the driver and his passenger shooting into the air from the car at absolutely nothing at all. Cretinous maniacs or what?

time to abolish the outmoded activity I reckon. But who am I to say. This kind of thinking needs to come from any citizens who feel strongly about it. I agree that the supermarket is probably the best place to buy food! also being somewhat selfish, it means that I dare not go into any rural area for walks with or without my dog, for fear of being shot at accidentally, or ............. I am sure the noise I heard this morning was less than 200m from myhome, but I was in bed, ...
Hunting is totally unecessary here. No need for cullin g, but seems the need fo rkilling still exists. I hate it, but it is one of those things that is still permitted, but n order to keep some of it under control I think the use of the 140 number is a good idea. But that does not help the poor animals that get hurt, neglected or abandoned.

From Cypriots we have spoken to it is a "boys day out". Take a picnic, raki and enjoy they day. Any dead critters are a bonus.

There is no need for hunting in any form, in any country. Why not set a few prisoners free from the local jail and hunt them down. Or clay pigeon shooting seems to be a good testing system.

When you see Stupid Americans on tv protesting their right to bear arms there is not a hope in hell of stopping hunting, it is a right but not a necessity!

Then that is when you dial 140. My poor local Muhtar had to go to jail cos he shot a rellie by mistake. But no one ever seems to learn.

I think a lot of us forget, and sometimes may even feel we are wasting our time cos it won't have any effect, but I think we owe it to our country where we live to do the best we can to ensure that laws are upheld. And that is a reminder to me as much as to anyone else.

A couple of years ago we were sat on our patio when a shot gun pellet just missed my wifes head and hit the patio door. It was out of hunting season which goes to prove some people do just what they like.

It was not so long ago that what Oscar Wilde called "The unspeakable in full pursuit of the inedible" was not only practiced but envied as a prerogative of the upper classes in the UK. And not just vermin , but Tarka The Otter and all those cute little bambies. The impossible takes a little longer. Before it was banned, what I was least comfortable with was encouraging the hounds in blood lust. They might have been well fed and housed, but what chances did they have once their working life was over? At least gun dogs are bred and trained to mark and retrieve not to injure and kill.

And people and horses were killed and seriously injured in the process

At least now there are laws here to restrict hunting to seasons and to types of victims (humans excluded!). What is needed is more enforcement which means responsible and unemotional reporting of serious breaches.

Meanwhile I am still getting over the essay on the (highly original!) subject of "What I did last weekend" which reported "I went hunting and shot three partriges (sic), a hare and my Uncle".

As to the dogs, they are not always tied up all day. If you walk the hills (as I used to when I could) on Sundays you will meet hunting dogs being excercised and having a wonderful time. And they sometimes get walked on a lead very late at night (presumably only time their owners have) , the problem being they start alll the other dogs barking.

I find the hunter keeping dogs degres less obxious than those who keep large and potentially dangerous dogs as status symbols. Perhaps we should try to persuade the hunters that better fed , housed and trained dogs are more effective!
