I transferred a sum of money by bank transfer from Garanti Bank to Credit West. I was charged over 400TL by Garanti, but just 30TL by Credit West. Was told that this was not unusual for Turkish banks.

Was seriously thinking of doing it the other way round next week. I wonder what will happen then and whether the amount you move has any bearing?

Ask 'em FIRST - don't go transferring money without finding out what the charges are beforehand!
Ask some of the Pakistani waiters who send money home what method they use to transfer money - they will not be paying over the odds

I have transferred money between banks with in TRNC, e.g HSBC to local bank and vice versa using a 'central bank transfer' which costs nothing. Paperwork needs to be completed before 1pm for the transfer to be done same day. I would have thought that it would work between Garanti and Creditwest but perhaps not.

Was only joking KC, but certainly if I was to do it I'd take a couple of heavies with me and walk out with cash in my bag. I'd ask politely first of course so as not to make it look like a stick-up!! Not sure I would believe what they told me, "many a slip between cup and lip" is my mantra here.

Thanks for the heads up on this. We are transferring money between banks too. Eileen I need to pick your brains more on how you did your transfer. xx
