How to speed up an ageing Android device

Modern Android devices may not need speeding up as they will often have large memory and fast chip-sets. But if you've got an old Android phone or Tablet that seems to be slower than it was...and you have tried deleting all the old junk apps that you've installed but not used since - there are settings you can play with that may help.
To change these settings you need to get into 'Developer Mode'...
To do this go into settings and 'About tablet' or 'About phone'
Scroll down until you see the item 'Build number'
Now tap this item five or six times and you will see the device steadily count down until it declares "You are now a developer"
Now use the back arrow to return to the first settings screen and scroll down until you see 'Developer options'
Tap on this and at the top set 'Developer options' to 'On'
Then scroll down until you get to the 'Drawing' section and specifically the 'Transition animation scale' setting and set it to 'Animation off' this will speed up the switch between screens when navigating through your apps. The default scale is slowing down the switch deliberately to make it seem smooth - but in reality it is just slowing things down....
Now scroll down to 'Apps'
and set 'Don't keep activities' - this gets rid of the app in memory once you shut it down (it doesn't delete anything it just cleans out the memory to make it available for other apps thus speeding them up)
Now go into 'Background process limit' and change it from 'Standard limit' to 'At most, 4 processes'.... Believe it or not 'Standard limit' is unlimited and you could end up with dozens of apps taking up valuable memory.
Now back-arrow out of the Developer options and see if it has helped things.... You can always set these options back to their original settings if you see no benefit...
Switching Developer options off will reset them all to default so you can choose..
