Cyprus History - 1875 - Any historians out there?

I could not find a proper place to post this topic, perhaps Soner may consider having a history place to post.

Anyway here goes: In a fascinating book I am reading about 3 generations of a family, the year is 1875 and the British were leasing Cyprus from the Sultan for £92,000 per year.

I have come across a place called Milltown, apparently snuggled under the five finger mountain and not too far from Nicosia. It was a town of some size as it had it's own Kaymakim (provincial governer). It also had 16 flour mills which were to provide the bakers with flour in Nicosia.

I am so puzzled as to where this place could possibly be and what it's name is now.

Any thoughts?

Very interesting Sue.Perhaps we should put an A.P.B. for the Dutch Crusader.

I will check out Sir Samuel Baker's book - 'Cyprus as I saw it in 1879' - he may have said something about it. What is the Greek or the Turkish word for 'Milltown'? Would that help?? You probably thought of that already.

Samuel Baker says the town of Kythrea had 32 flour mills and I looked on the map and it is just below Besparmak and is now called Değirmenlik. There was/is a big spring of water.

My better half Googled for this and the above is a very informative website.

See post / section 13 for the relevant information.

But there is a lot of info on there.

I am just the humble messenger.

Thanks Looseboots, very informative indeed but took a lot of ploughing through.

I think Dippersgirl has it right possibly. The fact that there was a spring made me fairly sure

I just do not understand why, if Milltown was not it's name then, why would the author use it, he has not used English style names for any other locations.

I think I will contact him through the publisher and see if I can verify our suspicions!

Thanks to all. Will post when I get a reply, if ever!

Well... it's Sir samuel Baker, not me. If you have a Kindle, the book is a free download. He is the typical arrogant English man of his time, who could afford to travel. He does know quite a lot, but definitely knows 'Best'.

Well, if you want information on something you have to try every avenue and I understand that this other Forum is good on historical information, not something which is prevalent on here.

Having said that, I have had more response on here.

Have now contacted the publishers with a question for the author. If no joy then will contact him via Ankhara University.

I shall get my answer in the end. Yorkshire terriers do not generally let go until they are satisfied!
