As non smokers we've never thought of this before but a friend has asked us to bring some cigarettes back for him next month. Are we actually allowed to bring ANY back over the border to Larnaca please?
Thanks

Only enough for personal consumption i.e. a couple of packets
If they go through your luggage they will confiscate them

It is absolutely not worth it for the amount you can bring - particularly if not for you!

Check the price of cigarettes at Larnaca airport. Not duty free but much cheaper than in the UK.

Legally you can bring 40 per person but it's only the greek side that check you and in 15 years I've only been checked twice.
I don't smoke but people I've been with have taken as many as they can pack.
If you consider the reward is worth the risk then fill your boots.

Well... at this end, maybe - but don't forget that if it's a large quantity, then you should really declare them when you get to the UK, as they will be able to tell that they have not had EU Duty paid on them, so a maximum of 200 per person there.

My understanding is the same as that above you can only take those out for personal use. Yes I have heard of tales of people getting mote through without a problem but I would just ask your friend if they are going to pay any fine you incur if you do get caught.

Who will fine and confiscate? GC's, TC's or UK?

Hi. Duty FREE cigarette allowance into UK is 200 per person while Duty PAID (purchased at Larnaca Airport) allowance is 800 per person.

Do you not think that authorities in the South monitor what's said on this forum? I will be pretty peeved if we start getting searched unnecessarily because someone is helping a friend commit slow suicide on the cheap.

Cigarettes in the north £18 for 200 at Ercan £5,60 for 10 at Larnaca tempting
Don't bother
The number of times i've crossed and seen people have their cases searched by the South usually every other time I cross
Don't forget that all luggage goes through xray at the airport so the packs are seen
Front page news on Cyprus Mail each week cigarette smuggling
Oh and by the time they have sorted you out your plane has departed deliberately delayed

Thank you all very much for your replies...I shall tell our friend we will not be bringing any cigarettes back for him!
I wasn't happy about it anyway so your input has confirmed my gut feeling!

I always bring my friend four cartons over(800) purchased at Larnaca Airport. They (Superkings Black) cost approx £44 per carton.
As you are paying duty on them in Cyprus they are not duty free-so you are legally allowed 800.
They are less than half the UK price.

Gov.uk website gives the answer. When entering UK no duty or tax will be charged on goods from EU countries. Travelling within the E U you can import cigs alcohol etc. From one EU country to another but they have to be taxed paid and as a result you can import many more than the 200 cigs duty free limit as long as they are for personal use or as a gift, there could be questions asked if the amount is more than 800.

There are quite a number of web sites which appear to be answer your question i.e. Larnaca Duty Free shop web page being one of them. Haven't looked myself to check them out though.

Maximum allowed, North to South, is 40 cigarettes.
It's up to you what you do...

Don't cry!
You can always buy some at the airport, cheaper than UK prices.
Or just give up smoking for a while?

No. The poster talks about Pyla, where there is no crossing point. They crossing is actually at Beyarmadu/Pergamos, which is on the ESBA area close to Dhekelia, not Lefkosa. The SBA Customs & Excise authorities at Beyarmadu and Black Knight crossings are more diligent than RoC Customs checks.
