What ice cream do you recommend?

I do make my own ice cream but is very rich with lots of cream & alcohol - put in to stop it freezing too much, not because we like it - but would like to buy some vanilla to eat with desserts as have friends coming over.
What do readers recommend please either North or South?

Absolutely great ice-cream.... always been the best. Much cheaper than homemade and better than B&J's and Haagen-dazs.

Marcos is delicious ice cream but for vanilla I buy Carte d’or kaymakli. It’s lovely.

Just make sure you don't buy mastic based ice cream by accident as it is commonly sold here and has a very odd gloopy texture compared to a classic Cornish.

Yes I have bought Mardo before & liked it, not sure about the Carte D'Or Kaymakli from memory it had a funny texture you used to be able to get CDOr vanilla but they stopped supplying it around 3 years ago.

Funnily enough, Gavin, I quite like the mastic flavour. Used quite a lot in the past (mastic, not ice cream) sealing windows so maybe I'm biased. It does look very much like vanilla in the carton.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to try mastic flavour ice cream. I did, some years back, horrendous taste never to be forgotten. Not sure if it is still available but if it is, avoid!

It definitely is still sold... it's a specially formulated slower-melting option common in very hot climates. The lads with mobile stalls in the harbour use it so they can befuddle clients with their bell ringing routine..."such fun!".

The tubs can be found in the supermarket bearing the Turkish 'mastik' but it's not always obvious.... a bit like tourists getting caught-out by 'off milk' not realising they have just added ayran to their coffee.... which is always a laugh.... if I had a pound for every-time that happens....

I use to like the Rose (Gül) flavoured ice-cream, which was made of that gloopy stuff, but very refreshing. Not seen it in a long time.

Walls Corneto but only because I like the song. Mardo is great. My wife buys Algida Keyif Festival. She refuses to tell me where she buys it as its a great bargain and does not want me to post it in case the stocks don't last.

I got Carte D'or Light Neapolitan from Erdener, less fat fewer calories but delicious.

OK so I'm going to 'come clean' here and tell you.... while you are in Mardo's treat yourself to a slice of their New York style baked caramel cheesecake... so it won't help a strict calorie-controlled diet but it is very naughty in a life-affirming good way.

Now that has puzzled me, Dondurma is what the guys with the stall just before Girne harbour sell, and I love it. The white (sade) more than the chocolate flavour.

I Googled Dondorma and it is mastic based apparently. Definitely different to the horrid mastic flavour ice cream I had previously bought in a tub from a supermarket.

Algida vanilla. Can't beat it. Very soft and creamy. Delicious and from most supermarkets
