just wondering if there is a route legally to report unethical builders who cheat their employees out of wages, scam the suppliers, and the owners. i know of a builder doing all this and he has successfully robbed peter to pay paul... workers get hollow promises to be paid, as do vendors...and aside from this such a builder as this - safety standards for building integrity comes into question which could have far wider implications!

Is there a 'name & shame" ? to warn future workers/vendors/owners

The non payment of the work force would appear to be common Cypriot practice. I understand the Bashkan of my local Belidiye has not paid his staff for eight months, according to an excellent English speaking Cypriot who has a relative working there. A case against the Bashkan over extortionate water supply charges and illegal road blocking of water tankers to households was taken to the Ombudsman, so that may be an avenue to seek recompense, or the courts? I fear you are falling into the trap of expecting Cypriot business, property and legal practices to conform to those of Europe and over 'The Pond.'

yes, i was hoping there would be a democratic way this would be handled. Appearently not - so an eye for an eye will prevail

Good luck with your crusade.

You could always name and shame them on here but the moderators may have a problem with that. Also, as you can be identified by your photograph (I assume it's genuine), then you might be putting yourself in a difficult position, so I wouldn't advise it.

my next question then: What DO the police do here? NOTHING EVIDENTLY - i mean clearly there is little law IF ANY being enforced here in trnc across the board - nothing but a 'good ole boys' club!

Democracy too young, or inefficient leaders, legislative structure lacking? Maybe there is a swamp here too that needs draining?! its a shame, such a beautiful island.

The Police here, as in most other countries will investigate criminal offences, not civil cases. If the suppliers of the building contractor allege fraud, they must seek legal advice. Non-payment of salaries is a civil matter. Do not castigate the Police for non-involvement in no criminal activity.

I agree with tomsteel, the Police here are pretty good by and large.. Obey the rules be polite and they will go out of the way to help you. What is a civil offence and what is a criminal one, tends to differ from country and certainly late payment of wages wouldn't constitute a criminal offence here. (even if it jolly well ought to be) I could write a book on what I personally would consider criminal offences perpetrated by our builder against us, but the law here says they are not.

This sounds very much like Medview?

They now charge "owners" £1600 per year for facilities that amount to no more than a few dirty pools.

Refuse to pay and have your water disconnected (which they charge at double the going rate for in the first place).

12 years on and no sign of deeds from "dodgy Ali"

Racketeering?

No point going to law, the whole system is corrupt.

No idea where 'Medview' is. However, deprivation of potable water is an issue as defined by UNHR regulations. Check it out on the internet.

Medview are all over the TRNC, however their main operation is in the Bogaz/Yarkoy area of Iskele. Deprivation of water may be a "crime" but Medview do not give a "FCUK".......

Many have been to the Police/Lawyers and much shaking of heads has ensued.......Still no water sold unless ransom paid.

Law, What Law?

Safakoy is not a good place to be.

No Medview in Bahceli/Kucuk Erenkoy, but we do have rogue mayor in Esentepe who attempted, illegally, to deprive owners of a water supply unless his extortionate charge was met. Fortunately, an appeal to the TRNC Ombudsmen, successfully was withheld and he was told to 'wind his neck in.'
