I can not believe on this little island that these vehicles are all on the road and if they are why have they not got a team out finding them?

Why not conduct a surprise one week inspection of ALL cars on the road? Impound vehicles with no certificate and/or other documentary infringements and make the owners/drivers leave the vehicle(s) at the check point until legal.

I know I don't live there but the thought of driving when I am over, when there could be so many untaxed/unlicenced cars fills me with dread

presuming you to be from the UK , how many drivers there are untaxed /unlicenced or lack Insurance are there ( proportionate to the TRNC) that would diving here fill you with dread ?

I think the number comes from an estimate of how many cars are driving without an "MOT". I read that some of the culprits are high end vehicles, possibly from hotels. The govt is losing a lot of money allegedly.

OK, so the numbers are as normal - a total guesstimate! NPR - ha, ha, what's a number plate and where can they be found? They might be those white things with a blue thing on them or those white things without a blue thing on them or those white things with a Z on them or those red things with a Z on them or those yellow things or those blank spaces at the front of a vehicle so the speed camera can't tell what they are or those things that start with TR or not? Which ones are legal anyway and why worry.

Drive defensively and live longer!!

It would, agreed. However, how would you then check for insurance and a current MoT certificate if there is no mechanism for checking the validity of vehicle use other than police checks, which are infrequent and subject to nepotism/cronyism/do you know who I am?

They do not look at the insurance when you tax a car anyway. The Insurance Companies have to contribute to a scheme that offers compensation to people hit by uninsured drivers.

Well, they certainly check mine when completing my annual car re-taxation plus Kocan, MOT, previous tax and emission certificate. Maybe I have a shifty look about me!

Why don't they do, as the DVLA once did, issue a Tax Disc to be displayed on the windscreen? But hold on, would they be displayed or simply a piece of paper with "Tax in the post" written on it - given the postal system they could get away with it for years.

A paper tax disc is issued, obviously you do not tax a vehicle here. The problem is display in the screen is subject to the effects of sunlight which bleaches the ink on the paper, rendering it useless to view. Hence, legal tax abiding citizens retain the disc within the vehicle and do not display it. Now, an alternative system - well, TRNC?
