I understand that both the AA and RAC do an excellent service re customs, visas through various countries and various routes to get here. Can't help with first part of your query.

The AA only cover you until you get to Turkey. Once we got to Turkey we had to buy Visa's and Insurance to drive the last leg.

If you stick to EU you should have no problem till you hit Turkey and then the fun will begin. Personally with a van load I would be tempted to use a carrier such as man with a van, Dolphin or Olaytrans. If you are only coming one way with the van it will need to be imported, as a commercial vehicle you may need to have a limited company (may be wrong). You will still need to go through the import rigmarole for all your belongings and use an agent. If the van is then returning to UK the cost of fuel and time both ways may make using a shipper cheaper. Have used Olaytrans in the past and they have been excellent.
