A true story
Many years ago now, a friend of mine kept the local village pub. Lunchtimes were never very busy, just a couple of local pensioners making a half pint last an hour or two and not much else. On this particular day, an elderly gentleman entered the pub and asked my friend "Are you serving lunches landlord?" to which my friend replied in the affirmative. The gentleman left and returned with his wife and several others, making a total of eight. They ordered and ate lunch and had a couple of drinks and then the gentleman went to my friend at the bar and asked to settle his account. My friend wrote him the bill which the man checked and he smiled and said" Thank you that was a lovely lunch, do you mind if I pay by cheque?" My friend replied that was " no problem Sir". The man took out his cheque book and started to write with a very expensive looking fountain pen. My friend was used to reading upside down and the banks name on the cheque the gentleman was writing was The Bank of England. The man finished writing the cheque and said "Would you like my card?" and my friend replied, "No Sir, that will not be necessary as I recognise your signature after all it is on all the bank notes in my till." The gentleman smiled and said thank you and they all left. Tat was the only cheque my friend never presented for payment.
