Açiçek Hospital, Girne

I would just like to say a big thank you to our local hospital's accident and emergency department.
Last night around 6pm my husband managed to saw across the base of his thumb (for those of you who know Graham - yes Again!). By the time I parked the car he had been taken inside and was seeing the Dr. The Dr immediately sent us around to the x-ray dept, guided and escorted by the guvenlik, security officer. Five minutes later the doctor was checking the x-ray which was up on his computer, ah yes tendon damage, telephoned the surgeon Dr Hussein,he will be here in 1 maybe 2 hours. Ok you go upstairs and wait and rest on the bed, guided again by the guvenlik, lovely cold aircon, bed rest and then an hour and half later sent back downstairs where Dr Hussein operated. A lovely Russian nurse who, like us, has lived here more than 2o years was assisting, even though she had come into the hospital to visit in laws and she was off duty. Smiling courtesy and friendliness all the way through with no demand for money, just - "my name is Dr Hussein, I'm here usually in the mornings, just ask for me if you need me". We were back home by 11 o'clock with appointments for follow up care all made.
With our family living here for so long, my grandson was born at Açiçek, and we've had lots of family emergencies over the years I can honestly say thank you again for the Cypriot hospitality. It was superb care from very caring people.

Just make sure you get the Tetanus shot and antibiotics that you need. I agree the A&E treatment is fantastic here, no waiting for hours to see a doctor.

That is so good to hear,
We the North Cyprus Cancer Charity Trust have been asked (begged) by the hospital to buy them some NEW beds to be able to treat and help their patients . These beds would not be used solely for their patients with Cancer but for anyone who is in need of their healing and care.
This is not a small amount of money and has taken us months of hard work with your help to earn it.
Reason ! The beds they have are falling to bits and they have had quotes for repair which is more costly than buying new ones.
Our reason in not coming to a decision as yet is because of the recent ''discussions'' on the name of our charity.
We would love to hear your thoughts and we would listen.
In the meantime when we read a post like this it makes us feel proud that we are helping the local State Hospitals help us all !
This is what we do and who we are !

It appeared to some that because we are the NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust and have been registered for 30 years and are so proud of that, we should ONLY be buying equipment to help Cancer sufferers.
Some were suggesting quite strongly we should change the name not realizing how long it took us to get our legalized status and how much was involved. in getting it.
Are we to buy the NEW beds for Girne State Hospital?
Some will have patients lying on them suffering with cancer and some will have patients lying on them with other complaints and illness's .
How do we decide?
We will listen and accept any help.
NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust
In the meantime and going off topic - please forgive us.
TABLE TOP SALE - This Monday 16th July. 12.00 NOON until 4.00 pm Seabreeze Bar and Restaurant.
All proceeds for our charity Thank you. X

You have been a registered charity for many years and have bought equipment to diagnose, treat, help people suffering from cancer, in doing this you have also helped other people who maybe be suffering from other diseases.
So, to the purchase of the hospital beds, yes, they may not be used just by cancer patients but they will be used by severely ill patients, patients who may be end of life, whether suffering from cancer or other diseases or simply coming to the end of their lives through advanced age.
To be comfortable and pain free is what we hope for at the end, a new bed may help in some way to achieve that.

I've spent most of my working life in the charity sector, and have helped a number of organisations examine their objectives in order to retain their charitable status. This was in the UK and I have little knowledge of the relevant legislation in KKTC but if you PM me, I'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Our thoughts entirely Lovelife and thank you.
Thank you to the last poster for offering his advice and so much appreciated but we have no problem in who we are, what we do and how we do it .
We are here to help the local State hospitals help us all - every nationality living here in North Cyprus whether they be babies, children, men or woman.
Others seem to have the problem in what we do and that is why we asked the question and brought out into the open the latest ''Wish List'' from Girne State Hospital.
The original poster was praising the help and care they had using this hospital and most likely we helped with this by buying vital equipment the government would not.
NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust.- We would welcome any more thoughts as the hospital would like an answer asap.

You are walking down the street carrying a bucket of water to your home - you probably live in the Esentepe area - you come across two children who are both on fire! One is on your side of the street and can only scream in Turkish, she is a girl. The other is a boy and is on the other side of the street, sadly he can only speak Greek. You have enough water for both of them, which one do you put out first or do you use all your water just on one?
You are the NCCCT and do excellent work for charity in the arena of cancer. Are you really trying to tell me that you would not help a person lying on the floor next to a cancer inflicted person simply because the person on the floor has only broken their back and is now totally disabled?
My question may seem harsh and my example of who would you help may seem cruel - you who have been running a charity for 30 years have far more experience in this area than I have years left to live but I could not help just one person where I in the position of being able to help many!!
The answer seems self evident to me - we are all here to help each other and you guys are the best at helping people. Keep it up please.
This has been written for those "others" who would perhaps just throw the water over one child - but which one?

Not harsh at all and we really do appreciate your comments because that is how we are feeling and have always done so..If what we buy, which please believe us is desperately needed by the State Hospitals , can save lives, care and comfort anyone in need is all what we work for.The reason why we have hijacked this post is just to let you all know what we have been asked to buy next and also because the initial question of '' Is the NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust really a Cancer charity;'' came from posters on this forum.
We just wanted to get across to the ''doubters'' what a poor state financially the local State Hospitals are in with very little help and sometimes none from the government.
Thank you - NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust.

Do it and be pleased the vast majority support you. For the minority doubters, pose your doubts by all means, but the Charity has the legal and charitable right to decide where its funds are spent providing there is a majority in favour. I, personally, would be most grateful for a fully functional hospital bed when, at 71+, I am very likely to need one. Rock on NCCCT.

They are desperate for new hospital beds, maybe anyone who has received really good treatment at silly cheap prices might want to make a donation. If enough people interested maybe Sona can suggest the best way to do this and we put out general message to raise monies?

The written list we have been given is asking for 25 Adult Beds plus the three children's beds but our thoughts are that any number would be greatly appreciated,
As laptatony has said they are desperate and has only confirmed what Angela Hasman, who acts as our go-between with the Hospital, told us after coming back from meeting with them.
If anyone would like to help that would be brilliant!

How much do the beds cost? I personally would be happy to see your money spent on the equipment needed whether specifically for cancer patients or not. You do fabulous work.

Thank you Meldy for you kind comments
We have the quote for this equipment i.e the beds and it is not cheap.
One adult bed fully equipped is just over 5000.00 TL each bed and they have asked for 25. Roughly working out at over £800.00 GBP per bed.
The children' s beds are just over 2,000.00 TL and they have asked for 3 roughly working out at £335.00p per bed.
If we could purchase this number the total amount comes to 140.550.00 TL which is approximately at today's rates a total of £ 23.000 .00 p STERLING . This takes a lot of earning!
We have increased the charities turnover drastically in the past 15 months but unfortunately the fall in the value of the TL is working against us as it is with everyone.
Please we do not want to get away from the original poster and the praise for the hospital but we are hoping some of you will appreciate the dilemma we are in because of the ''negative's'' aimed at our charity in the recent months on how we spend the funds raised with all your help
Is the NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust really a Cancer charity? was the post from memory!
We could not do what we do without your support and we really mean that!
NorthCyprusCancerCharityTrust.
We hope we have not upset anyone in divulging this information but our charity has always been an OPEN book and will continue to be so!

I hope this does not appear to be rude to those who queried your status. However, if the majority of your members vote to purchase equipment for State Hospitals which has dual, triple, quadruple benefit to cases other than cancer, why is there any doubt as to purchase or not? Doubters can, of course, join your organisation and express their opinion at your meetings. If you ain't in, you have no legitimate say. I assume the quoted prices are tax exempt etc? I am not a member, but with a close one suffering a second phase of cancer within two years, I know how devastated their view would be to deprive non-cancer suffering patients a clinically needed bed because they did not have that specific disease. Research the best price route available, buy and be dammned.

Firstly in reply to laptatony we would have to confer with the hospital on the actual specifics the beds they have asked for have.
Obviously these are medical beds but if you have contacts within this field we would be grateful for your help and advice and would suggest a meeting with you if possible and then the hospital.
In reply to tomsteel the charity once it is approached by either Lefkosa or Girne state Hospitals or indeed any other parties for help we have a meeting of the committee and we all discuss and decide on the outcome of those requests.
This has worked well for the past 30 years with no problem!
It has been only in the last few months that some people have been questioning the word Cancer in our name in relation to what we buy, how it is used and on whom and basically how our charity helps cancer patients which we found to be quite upsetting at the time. We think you yourself posted on this in support of us and we thank you again
.It is only because of this we wanted to '' put it out there'' i.e. the latest ''wish list'' and get feedback and genuine responses from you all.
We think this has been all positive.

We were invited to a TableTopSale organized by Claire Lamb and friends at the Seabreeze Bar and Restaurant yesterday to raise funds for our charity.
We took stock from both of our shops and Claire and her friends sold their own donations.
Between us, working together, a record amount on Sales Only was raised .
2,800. 00TL - enough with change to buy a medical bed for a sick child or over half the amount needed to buy a bed for a sick Adult
This was hard work for us all in this heat but well worth it. Thank you everyone.

We are posting on this previous post as hopefully you will all think we have a ''Happy Ever After'' ending''.
Last week we had meetings with Doctors from the Acicek Hospital and this morning two of their representatives came to see those of our 'A' Team who were working in Heartbeat, our charity shop by the Hospital.
Drum Roll please!
We have authorized the purchase of TWELVE Medical/Electronic Beds for use of Adults plus lockers plus food/medicine trays PLUS
THREE Medical.Electronic beds complete for the use of Children.
This is just the start for us and with the friends and supporters of our charity's help we will soon be buying more and other vital equipment which is often life saving ,.
We hope you all approve -- The hard work our Volunteers do is simply amazing especially in this intense heat but they do it because they care!
From the small local Charity with the BIG heart - Thank you all.
